Snow in Fallout? What the hell?

Like Tactics? Found a cool mod for another game that reminds you of Fallout? Playing those crappy spin-off console games called "Fallout"? Discuss here.

Snow in Fallout? What the hell?

Post by Ernesto »

I've been playing Fallout Tactics and Fallout II at the same time and I've come to notice one of Tactics' many faults.

One of the later missions require you to go into teh dark and cold mountains in order to stop teh evil robots. Teh mountains were so dark and cold that snow covered the land, all pretty-like. My squad had many snowball fights that day!

Fast forward 24 hours. The Chosen One, after making his way into the SAD, comes across a holodisk which describes a GNN Broadcast before the Big One. Those pre-holocaust folk better put on the scarfs, 'cause it's a chilly 90 F.

Now I may go by Celcius but... that sounds fairly warm. I'm also not Oppenheimer but I would assume that total nuclear anhililation would also warm up the world by a fair bit. Like, melting of the ice caps fair bit. Wouldn't all snow covered mountains be turned into bleached radiated hills?

Is this another place where Tactics dropped the ball again? Are my points valid? Am I a sorry excuse for a Fallout fan?

Nope, mountains are usually snowy, even when it's 90 degrees in other places. I'm a good 30-40 miles away from Mt. Rainier, and in the summer it gets to around 85-90 degrees around here, but Mt. Rainier stays as white as a Klan meeting. Now even if Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and the rest of the big cities in Washington, and the United States, or the world were pelted with atomic rocks, I don't think the ice caps would all melt along with all the snow and ice on mountains. If it were to get that hot nothing would survive and the entire world would be under water. Then you know what we would have? Waterworld, barf. Plus that 90 degrees was from gloal warming, I think that after, what is it, 130 years? The temperature would start to come back down because next to no one is around polluting except wood fires.

I saw Bill Nye once at the Museum of Flight and he seemed like a nice guy, but then my friend met him at the Democratic National Convention in Seattle and said he was a pompous asshole.

Dude, it makes perfect sense. It's the rockies. They'd still be kinda chilly after the rest of the world was baked.

Usually I think of the wasteland as Afganistan. and I watched a little Documentary where your American soldiers were running around and I notice that, yes indeed on the tops of mountains there was snow, I was quite surprised that Afganis even had a taste of Canadian winters, but still putting a frozen wonderland kinda does ruin the sand desert type atmosphere the good ol' Blackisle people strived to create.

I think icy, wind-swept crags can be just as desolate as a scorched wasteland. The point of the post-apocalyptic environent is not necessarily the desert, but more accurately, radical extremes of the environment.

Nah, according to MCA that wouldn't happen in a crazy '50s nuclear war. We'd just go straight to sun-scorched wastelands. It's one of his more legitimate ideas.

he's right, the yield of the weapons back then wasn't enough to throw up the huge dust clouds into the jet-stream to block the sun...

although, a nuclear axchange on a global scale might very well cause untold tectonic activity, causing long dormant volcano's to erupt.. releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere... :confused2:

I live in Colorado, any day of the year (as long as it isn't an unusually hot summer) I can look out the window up to the 14000 ft peaks in the distance and see white snow (usually really small ammounts) even if it's pretty hot where I am.

The whole thing about nuclear winter being caused by dust kicked up seams a little far-fetched, just because there would have to be so much dust, and that dust would have to be very fine in order to stay aloft for a long long time.
I'll beleive it when I see it.

Maybe so, but the point is that Fallout, wacky '50s comic it is, is simply plunged into a wasteland with hellish hot weather. Just like with many other things, such as the giant radioactive beasties, there's no scientific explanation; that's just the way the devs felt things would be right.

Still, the Bible timeline speaks of The Great Winter. But that is quite some time after the Great War. Presumably temperatures dropped again after a couple of decades?
