Grammar nazi ? Bah, that's pathetic ! Case in point - 'an unusual' is correct, rather than 'a unusual' because unusual begins with a vowel. The only exception to this is the word hotel, i.e 'an hotel.' It sounds quaint, but it is correct regardless.

It depends on the way you pronounce the word ie. it doesn't matter if the first *letter* is a vowel, it depends on the fact if it is *pronounced* like a vowel or not.

A uniform - it is pronounced as "juniform".
An umbrella - it is pronounced as "ambrella".

I suck at explaining this stuff, but the word we were talking about was *USUAL*, not *UNUSUAL*.
