Even hoping for anything else than 3d is very naive, and since 3d doesnt exckude the possibility of TB combat or isometricish viewpoint I'll vote for 3d.

By the time the game comes out computers will have advanced so much that what we consider ninja specs now will become low spec machines by then anyway.

I doubt there are many games currently in pre-development that won't have 3d graphics of some sort.

As I've said many times before, a 3D engine is fine. The top down viewpoint and pure turn based combat should stay, though, and both can be implemented with 3D.

3D isn't bad, and is expected out of a professional company.

Indeed. I think we have a chance of getting the top down viewpoint, which is important for many reasons like making the game feel more like a boardgame than a FPS, but that's for another post... and the turn based combat. I think there's hope in getting those two things in the game as they're meant to be. The 2D/3D thing is redundant really, 3D is fine with me.

What I think would make for more livelier debate is wether to have hexes versus not having hexes.

Well, at least I am on the hex camp.

You are so right. The engine it just needs a little queak and more content to the game.

Games require way too high specs these days anyways.

But at least it's easy to cram all that pretty shit into really tight space.

If a 3D engine is done well and the people who's doing the models and skinning does that well, it can not do anythingbut look good...remember all the graphics in fallout are rendered 3D models.

Although I'd prefer a 2-d engine over a 3-d personally, I think if Bestheda wants sales that they'll go with a 3-d engine.

I did like the old engine, but you can't really keep an engine that's as old as that one. It's time to go forwards, different doesn't necessarily mean bad.

I'd go with a 3d engine. Like Teatime says, you can have a top-down view anyways. Although the motto for using the same engine in fallout 2 was "if it ain't broke don't fix it" you can't really go with that this time.

Why can't you! Thats stupid there is no problem in Graphics I see no reason why the old engine is so obsolete. It started 2d why not stay I say just a little shoe polish to the graphics, Good writers, and No bugs and lots more weapons and item not to say the least. And make it like Window 95/98 compatible like the original I mean it doesn't have to but it would be nice.

Because the game wouldn't be competative, if they made it like that it would only appeal to a few thousand and would sell very few copies outside the fanbase. No company would survive making games like that, remember they're doing this for a living, putting food on the table and kids through school means making games that appeal to the lowest common denominator. That means shiny graphics, the best we can hope for is that they don't throw the baby out with the bath water and keep some of the things that made Fallout great.

3D is a given. They'd be negligent to use the old engine.

Which reminds me. Personally, the fixed camera has got to go too, and I'm sure it will. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to swivel the camera around now and actually see the northern and western surface of things.

So then we all agree that the 2d engine was awesome, but that the way games are today they will not make games that appeal to fans but to a population. This is what I hate to say, but here is another way a classic game will be destroyed and never heard about again and never be made into another game. I am pronouncing now that if fallout 3 doesn't release on time or it scores very bad I will probably never come back to this forum again because there will be no meaning to Fallout.

I think the way Tactics presented graphics(3d designed in a 2d prespective) was pretty much perfect, when it comes to graphics.
I like handrawn, or what looks as hand-drawn, which Tactics was.
3d is still very underdeveloped to cover FO, as I see it.

Of course it's bethesda's call and in addition, graphics is not a game, gameplay is, graphics come after it. I certainly wouldn't like to make to make an upgrade for any game, but we'll see.

I think minimum(system) being a bit higher than Tactics, will be reasonable.
