I prefer the term geek myself.
I don't like Fedora Core personally, I know someone who has it installed but I don't like it's default settings. I just like Kubuntu for working right away the way I want. And apt-get is much better.
I use Linux because it has all I need and for other reasons. When I was a kid fiddling around with Windows, there were lots of features of which I said "Why isn't it there?" or "It's stupid how it works", Linux has all these things and more. And I don't want to follow a giant company for my computer, I won't pay 300$ for some software that sometimes require additionnal paid programs.
I tell people about it but if they don't want to change, I won't force them(I'll push them. A little.). It's just a matter of choice. I felt confortable with Windows, a little like a house I fondly like but need to leave because of various problems, before I switched to Linux, which I now feel confortable with.
Try the Distribution chooser.

At least you tried...
You'll be able to get help in the #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net
You have a router or a modem? If a router, it should've been configured with DHCP automatically, if not... You need to go check in System -> Administration(if using Gnome) -> Network and write your manual address yourself.
