please no jews, I am not letting you try and lead another part of humanity on a quest just to die again and once more claim superiority in death.

if jews should be present, they should be in gas chambers, or maybe 1 that still thinks jesus wasnt the messiah, that would be cool. Try to convert you away from christianity.

Indeed there was mismatch.

But the "real" religions would be alot of story and possibilities for lost of quests. I always wondered where that guy with the sign saying
"The end is at hand" went ?
or who of those left this earth is hell incarnate since "judgement" day came and left, but no jesus or nothing, no ascension.

but maybe this should be a game in it self as it can quickly take alot of space and time, which would rob FO3 of any fallouty story.

Just because you can't come out and say that X real-world religion went in Y direction and became Z game religion there's enough room to maneuver as long as the names are changed. I'm sure we can think of a real-world "religion" -- although there's some debate in certain countries as to whether or not they constitute a religion -- that was parodied in FO2. Yet they were never mentioned by name, and -- perhaps more importantly -- IPLY/BIS was never sued.

I think major religions in Fallout 3 would invoke thoughts of irony, seeing as they would most likely be responsible for the nuclear holocaust.

What the hell, shove christianity in there, Fallout wouldn't be Fallout without a little humour, and "This woman got pregnant without having sex and gave birth to the son of an invisible man in the sky" is sure to get a few laughs. Hell, the player should be able to get a random encounter in the form of an old well preserved pre-war Library where a Bible can be found in the 'Fiction' section.

If the player reads it, they get -1 to intellect but get free bread and wine from any of the chapels scattered around the game world.

Fallout lore doesn't say anything about religion being the cause of the wars..
As far as I remember, there was one last reserve of oil found very deep in the ocean. First one to build a rig on it, would get the oil.
The US got it first, though china accused the US of stealing plans from them. Canada gets annexed.
Somewhere after this is where the nukes are thrown around.

Though there are several religions founded after.
The cult in Fo1, Hubology in Fo2, the nuke-worshipping ghouls(FoT), and then there are the tribes who have a near-religious belief.

I for one would like some sun or radscorp worshipping fanatic raiders who slaughter, rape and pillage in the games.
