When it's very late and dark and quiet, I put "Dream Town", which is the song that plays in Modoc, on loop and listen to it endlessly. It's pretty :psychosniper:

the music is a huge part of the atmosphere in the first two games, really good rpg ambiance you never get tired of. The soundtrack for FOT basically sucked, so I hope they can come up with some new postapocalyplic tracks with the spirit of the wastes for FO3, instead of just doing weak sound-alikes. The man for the job might be Gustaf Hildebrand or Tetsu Inoue... or perhaps even Mark Morgan

agreed, soundtrack is quite critical to the enjoyment of the game. it shouldn't be too intrusive: upbeat techno soundtracks get annoying quickly, and soundtracks with lots of hooks are distracting. however, it still has to give you a strong feeling. good ambience is a hard spot to hit, and consequently, this is why most games have shitty soundtracks.

hafler trio for fallout 3 soundtrack. :rockon:

They're both excellent soundtracks. The first thing I do when starting the games is to crank up the music and master volumes.

The first though I like a little better, there are so many different elements that they throw in, it really portrays the multi-cultural ideas pretty well? I'm thinking specifically of the Hub and Shady Sands. Also the cave music is pretty cool.

2 has some catchier songs, I like Vault City. I'm not really that thrilled by the Highwayman song though. The music throughout the game I think sounds a little less "inspired" maybe, but it is still very good.

Hey atoga, maby you could hook me up with some hafler trio songs, read obout them at Discogs and thier way of making music intrigues me...
I'm behind some kind of university filter so can't use any p2p services (DC++, torrents even ftp (my landlords a real wanker)).

Totally - I feel like if I were gonna get in my car and cruise over the wastes, that is what I would be listening to while doing it.

I don't really have any complaints with one soundtrack compared to the other, I like them both equally, and there are standouts on each.

I like the oppressive ambient sounds when visiting the Military Base or Glow. The music track for New Reno also is quite fitting.

Music in Fallout 3 definitely should portray the overall nature of the location you're at. For example, the music should shift when you're traveling in highly radiated areas; the ticking sound of a geiger counter would be a nice touch.

I like that idea a lot.

It reminds me of the music in the original System Shock - for example when you got into the reactor the music changed from a lighthearted electronic piece to a heavy droning piece that reminded you of the fact there was some seriously dangerous machinery hanging around.

half-lifes 1 and 2 are another example of games with great soundtracks - in fact great, sound, period (the few bits of thumping techno battle muziek aside). most of the areas in half-life 2 had some sound associated with them (droning generators, slowly burning fire, dripping water, etc.) that really added to the feel. surprisingly, this is something that most shooters seem to fail to do well, even though it's such a simple thing.

ambient noise is certainly a big part of the soundtrack. however, the background noize should be something more abstract (aimless industrial noise perhaps).

can you use bittorrent? i was living in rez last year and they made soulseek nigh impossible to use, but torrents still worked okay. there was also a rather cool campus-wide dc++ network with uber speeds, though most of the stuff on it was a bit shit.

Putty is an awesome program, however it requires a lot of work. You either need a stable server (my brother was in uni in London, and he had a friend in Cambridge set a server up for him), or you can look for free anonymous tunnels all the time. The disadvantages of that include having occasional disconnects when the server goes down (they're usually only up for 2-3 days at a time) and varying speeds.

If you live in the states, I just recommend using a program called HTTP-Tunnel. I used it when I went to school in Switzerland (in order to get past firewall as well), but it was bare slow since all the servers were based in the U.S. I could do my pornsite browsing, but not much more than that.

Use HTTP-Tunnel together with Sockscap.
