Stars!, Galactic Overlords, and similar web-based games

Post by V for Vendetta »

Just a random flypaper question to see what I can find.

I assume someone here is familiar with Stars!, the shareware space colonization game that came out about 8 or 9 years ago. Basically a no-frills Master of Orion with a lot more intellect, and a TON of customization options. Anyway, with no more school and at the moment no job to do, I'm looking for something similar. I know there was a similar open-source project in the works years ago, but to my knowledge it fizzled out. Does anyone around know about something similar in the cheap-to-nothing category of cost? HOTU and MobyGames haven't turned up much.

Also, a few years ago I played a game very similar to the web-based Galactic Overlords and other games built on the Alien Assault Trader model. It had a much better GUI, a handful of races to pick from with different characteristics, a lot more trading, more nuanced alliances, better combat, etc... anybody know what I'm talking about, if it's still around, and/or if something else like it exists? Essentially I'm lookin' for something better than AAT-based games.

Galactic Civilizations is pretty good. There's an expansion for it and a sequel due too.

I remembered an old Unix game called Galactic Bloodshed. Apparently there is a PC client now. This page mentions a few other space games.

To it's credit, it's only like 4 bucks now.

Since I am not familiar with Stars! and a google turns up some constellation web sites, does anyone have a link to where I might find it?

I've been trying to find a decent MOOish game besides GalCiv for a while, that will run in windows. No luck eh.

Yeah, GalCiv is a pretty good time killer. You know, the "one...more...turn" -phenomenon.

Never played GO, but from what you're describing it's either TDZK or Merchant Wars/Realms/whatever the hell they call it.
