My weekend project, Operation Mumin Gates.

Post by Antimeasure »

I got tired of various errors appearing on my computer, running a busted win xp so i thought i should try linux. But linux whole layout and shit seems a bit gay, so I need to emulate windows through redhat linux.

But i guess there are tens of thousands emulated windows that one could use, so i need help from you to get the right one.

Every linux-fanboy say that linux is so virus free and whatnot, but would a emulated windows running on linux make it likewise vurnable as plain old Xp/Win2k?

Hopefully this will all end good, with the stability of linux and the familiarity of windows.

Start with finding me good emulators.

Of all the thousands of linux boards that actually deal with this shit, infested with carebears who actually genuinely want to help anyone, you decide to post it on a forum that isn't related...

Emulation is never a really wise idea. I have no experience on Linux whatsoever, but I can tell you, with my limited experience, that don't bother running anything mid- or hi-end through that emulated Windows OS...

Summary

There is no perfect solution for playing Windows games under Linux. The best solution is to look and see whether a Linux binary is provided for the game, or to go find games that are written to play under Linux. Id Software and Epic Games both release Linux binaries for their games. Keep in mind that if you opt to use a solution such as Win4Lin or VMware, you have to own a valid copy of the Windows version you intend to use. Solutions such as WINE, CrossOver Office and Cedega implement the APIs without requiring the operating system to be installed.

Still, as you can see, there are many options if you are really determined to play a Windows game in Linux without having to dual-boot.

I have a mate in Germany, god bless him, he's actually a programmer and he's also using Linux. Everytime we write each other emails, and that's about every 3 months, he's complaining about his Linux.

He's just an example because he's a programmer and therefore sort of qualified to judge.

I know heaps of people having troube with Linux.

The whole Linux idea has a good concept but it's far from beeing perfect.

I use Windows XP with an ARMY of tools supporting it and I have no trouble at all.

Well sometimes I have trouble if I fuck something up, but in such a case I know what's wrong and I can fix it.

Reinstall Win XP and before you do that make a plan of tool you need, gather them.
Finally reinstall it.
Install the tools before you go online.
Enjoy.

I reckon everyone has his own collection of favorite Win XP tools, so maybe let's collect some and discuss them so we can find a good solution for Antimeasure, and maybe all of us (too many people have serious troube with Windows [XP]).

Cheers. :drunk:

Cedega from Transgaming for emulating games. I use it for City of Heroes and Warcraft III

VMware for running other OSes, no 3D accel though, but I used to do this to program in Windows.

Just keep a dual boot for some games.

www.linuxquestions.org or me for all linux-related questions, not here.
