No, I think there was a time limit to finish this quest. Dunno exactly, it might have been a couple of days only. So it would be imposible to get to SAD and back within the time limit. Never tried it though.

Talking to Dr Wong, Fung, whatever their names are, is the only way to do this quest.

Yeah you can, but not from SAD...

You need to convince the Dr to return it. If I remember correctly (in addition to convincing him), you'll need 1000$ or have met the Dr. in Broken Hills (and have that Dr. mention him).

Doc Holliday is the name of the doctor in Broken Hills. I think you need to pay the 1000$ to Dr.Fung(?) in Chinatown as Dr. Wong promises to return the spleen for free. I personally never have paid the 1000$ though. Hope I got the names right.

that would have put another pop culture reference in a game already full of them.

No, it's not you who does that, it's Dr Fung (or Fong, or whatever), the one with the spleen anyway. If you piss him off instead of giving it back he'll eat it with said beans.

There's anothere referece about this with a liver (i think) in SAD, albeit it was eaten by the doner's own mouth :P

If you ask Doc Holliday about his past, he will reveal that he was trained by Dr. Wong. If you mention Doc Holliday to Dr. Wong, he will put Chip's spleen back in for free. If you discuss the "Silence of the Lambs" reference with Dr. Fung, he will give you the spleen for free, although I've never tried other dialog options.

In other words, the whole thing should cost you nothing.

Not exactly Red, some soldiers messed up with the machine the doc was using for a prank and with the machine screwed the doc accidently took the liver of private (insert name here), the doc then cooked the liver and sent it to the soldiers that messed with the machine saying that it was a gift from the captain or general... And so they ate it happily and the stayed happy too. (Note: The private was a corpse, when the liver was taken out so the doc didn't kill him.)

If i recall correctly, that's what happened.

Could you get the spleen from SAD first, then go to San Fran?

I wouldn't think so. From a game logic point of view, it doesn't work. The only good reason for a character to carry a liver around would be if they had knowledge of the Chip's spleen quest beforehand. Since you're not supposed to have knowlegde of the quest beforehand, it's safe to assume that the designers wouldn't create any dialog paths for those who do.

Also, it might be that Chip's body would reject a spleen that's been frozen for 150+ years and then carried around the wasteland for a couple weeks.

Think Davin or Miria. Somebody ought to try this to see if it works. I would, but, um... *Runs away*

Only the brain extraction works.

Well, you can set it to spleen (and say, Dog), then extract it from a Deathclaw.

And you'll still get a Brain!

Um, dude, that's exactly what I said, only in one sentence of about 5 words. Futhermore you're wrong about the machine going bad. This was intentionally done by the Dr.

Meh, he's more or less right about the liver thing and the doctor giving it to the soldiers to eat...
Plus if you try to get any other organ other then a brain, the game says that something broke and there's only mush or something like that... so there were no spleens in the Depot anyways... plus at some point it tells you that the only thing that you can extract is a brain, because everything else broke when no one was looking...

You have it wrong, in the movie Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lechter does not eat a spleen, he says he ate a LIVER, with fava beans and a nice chiante. Just to clear that up.
