and if you do get into the vault, remember to goto floor 2, and in the room one right of the bottom one is the Voice recognition chip, this will save you the pain of getting one in Reno, iirc it costs a lot of cash

If you wanna take it there you could just go to navarro and get the PA and then vault 13 (or is it 15) for the nav parts, and hack shi CPU for the fuel and you'r of to the rig, and gas SOBs - but where's the fun in that??
anyone ever timed how fast they could complete F2???

You're comparing sneaking into Vault 8 to retrieve a wrench for a rather annoying sidequest to skipping to Navarro at the start of the game?

You could just goto Navarro at the very begginign of the game. Just head towards sanfran, talk to the BOS chappie and bluff as a new recruit. So you are a lvl 1 tribal with a plasma rifle and APA!

I find that when one does that one gets less XP in the long run, seeing as how it is boring as hell to do any of the quests in the first several towns.
