Well, if KDE works for you, that's good. I have never seen the point in debating interfaces or OS's, most people are using either for a good reason.
If someone wants to get into Linux, they'll learn about it and try it out, forcing opinions on people never works. I used to be big into telling everyone and their dog to use Linux, but it just resulted in bitterness. For example, saying Kubuntu is a beginner's toy OS wouldn't sway your opinion

@PiP: Linux has a few native ports, like NWN, UT2004, etc. For everything else, you need to emulate with either Wine, Cedega, DOSBox, VMWare, Qemu, etc. I use Wine for things like Diablo 2 and a few older games. In reality, anything new and spicy that uses Direct X normally doesn't emulate too well. Personally I dual boot, Windows XP for games (almost setup like a console platform), and Linux for everything else.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to start an interface war. I was drunk when I posted that, I was feeling like it but I usually about Linux/free software to people who aren't interested.

I don't have Windows anymore(I use VMWare for school, though) and I play most of my games under Cedega. If it doesn't work, I play on another computer. I don't play enough games to warrant dual-boot.

I've tried that twice before in the past (RH 7 & RH 8, I think, maybe RH 9 too). The problem is I never get around to the "everything else" part because Windows is so easy to use and lacks most the hardware compatibility issues. The security issues with Windows are very real but also very easy to keep up with (so far). I know all the problems in Linux (hardware, lack of easy-to-use software) can be surmounted with effort, but the "why bother" feeling always kicks in at some point. That said, I'm going to install Fedora Core 4 (dual XP boot) within the next week after I decide some hard drive things.

@baby arm: Yeah, I could definately see that, one of my friends has a similar problem. If XP is working though, you may as well just stick with that, it has matured enough anyways to be close to Linux from a technical standpoint (SP2 + smart install = secure enough box). Even using some open source programs on Windows seems fine enough for most people (stuff like Firefox, Azureus, the GIMP, etc.)
I don't use Linux for it's technical merits though, it's because many minor things bug me about XP, and it eventually added up enough that I decided to switch. Then all the options and freedom in Linux kept me there. Normally a case of use what's best though.
I personally like the option of recompiling my kernel, hand compiling each software program, a powerful command line, customization out the wazoo, etc. Even minor stuff like virtual workspaces and window layering. I know that isn't for everyone though, not by a long stretch.
Even using a "friendly" distro normally ends up being a Windows-like clone, which sort of defeats the purpose.

Diablo 2 is just one of the many games I play, it's mainly installed to keep my old characters from expiring. Besides, I use a seperate 10 year old laptop for "real" games like Wasteland and Fallout.
And I'm on these boards to post my desktop and talk Linux
