If I recall, there wasn't much use for skills like repair, gamble, and science, was there? The combat skills are much more helpful. Trying to recall this as I build my character.

Yes and no. You shouldn't worry about that, you'll make it alright this way or another.

Science is rather helpfull. Also do some doctoring + gambling and say hello to combat implants (FO2). Yes, you can get the money without gambling, but it's annoying to gather the money from vendors when they only have like 800-1000$ at times.

At the moment I'm going for a fastshot heavy weapons guy. 3-4 bursts with heavy weapons usually clear the battlefield quite effectively.

Gambling - if you need a lot of money, quick. Not that necessary at all.

Science & Repair - good for plenty of quests, at least in Fallout 2. Getting NPCs that have those skills (Vic, Myron) you can pretty much get away with low % in these, however.

Speech is pretty much the ultimate skill, which you'll need to aqcuire most quests and to achieve the highest xp reward and stuff D: So it isn't really that simple to just say that combat skills are more important.

Throwing stuff and hassling around with explosives + outdoorsman are pretty much the most useless skills, the rest serve, at least some sort, of purpose.

how does one get lots of money through gambling in FO1 or FO2? I never figured that out :susan:

You need 101 or 102 % in Gambling, if I remember correctly and then if you keep gambling with small to medium bets, you will win more often than lose. So you can make an endless loop by pressing 1 for awhile and voilá, you've got plenty of money.

also, if you go to the roulette tables in junktown/hub, and press down the 4 and 1 keys, respectivley, your caps should increase bu the tens of thousands. i did this in the early game with 2000 caps and came out with roughly 13 000 caps

FO2: Mac Version

Have read Per's Commentaries, and do not recall any specific tips.
I think there's a suggestion to not invest skill points in Gambling.
Some betting tables may be more predictable then others.

Have gambled out of perceived necessity in Den.
Spend some time with the craps mini game at the first table in Becky's.
Not playing 'Iron' persona, so used 'save' to limit loses and find less risky bets.

Power saving buys the time to learn where to bet with a good pay off.

A double 5 pays 8 to 1, I think. A relatively safer place to let some money ride.
After the first roll, if no '7', I remember only a 4 and 6 will lose.
After a while, ride on the more likely numbers. but these are easily 'crapped'.
If confident that the mini game is 'fair', then can make $100 bets and try some of the 30 to 1 pay offs.

With 4 thousand can arm and ammo PC and Vic.
With 8 thousand can armor all and buy up the healing powders and stimpacs.

The deadly early game encounters between Den and Modoc have less flight and more fight.
The dungeon crawl mountain caves are opportunities to level up before the random encounters start wielding H+K shotguns or worse.

Believe that, making your own luck, 'gaming' the gambling, at Becky's works in PC version.
