What they did is they the exploited an...exploit in, yep, you guessed it, MICROSOFT'S e-mail system and leached little bits of all the stuff going across the e-mail system at Valve and assembled the source code that way.

Clever, but fucking ANNOYING for those who wanted it in 2003.

With HL2, the problem was that when the source code was taken, since the game will also be released on Steam, the Steam code for HL2 was taken.
