We have the first details from Activision on the company's upcoming role-playing game, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Bloodlines will combine first-person action with role-playing elements, and it is being developed by Troika Games, the studio that was responsible for the 2001 RPG Arcanum, and which was also founded by RPG veterans Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, the creators of the Fallout role-playing game series. The game will be powered by Valve Software's Source engine, which is also being used by Valve to develop Half-Life 2. According to Valve Software cofounder Gabe Newell, "With Vampire, Troika is proving [that the] Source [engine] can reach beyond the world of FPS games. The character system, rendering abilities, and contextual AI features of Source, combined with the veteran RPG design talent at Troika, is a great representation of the innovation we hope to enable with this technology."
Well, i was hoping for something more original, but at least World of Darkness fans should be happy - IIRC most of the WoD-based games have been crap (first Vampire: the Masquarade game, Werewolf: Apocalypse or Hunter: the Reckoning, made by Digital Mayhem, makers of Fallout : Enforcer aka FOBOS).

Thanks to Saint_Proverbius for posting it at RPG Codex and not posting it here

Maybe there's a lesson in that? DaC IS a Post-Apocalyptic site and not a general RPG news site. Saint was also critiscised by everyone for posting Lionheart news and that had more to do with Fallout than this does.

... or you weren't being sarcastic and you really are thanking Saint?

Either way, it'll be interesting to see what Troika Games can do with the title. I've never played this Vampire series of games, so all I can think is a Thief type game where there's a strong story, a bit of action but it's all with a nice twist.

Troika have updated their front page with a Bloodlines logo. No game info though.

I'm both sarcastic and thanking Saint at the same time ;).

Yeah, i know DAC shouldn't cover all Troika news, but info about new Troika title being announced is ok, just like info on ToEE or Lionheart being announced, since they're in some way connected to Fallout. I'm against covering all ToEE, LH and VMB news, since that's what RPG Codex, Eye on Troika or Lionheart Chronicles are for.

And as for "vampire series of games" - there's no such series. The only thing Bloodlines and Redemption have in common is that they're based on the same PnP RPG.

I'm definitely looking forward to this game. The Half Life 2 Source engine looks very impressive, and seeing what Valve is capable of I have no doubt in my mind that the game's going to be top notch from the engine side - and you've really got to argue that Troika's never produced a failure before.

hmmm...dnd and now vampire the masqueararada? Will they be making the next baldurs gate and pokemon games too?

The original game was average. A nice concept (VAMPIRE POWERS :O) but poor implemention or something.

As i've said, this is not a sequel, but a different cRPG based on the same PnP RPG.

I find the World of Darkness games too angsty for me. "Oh, I am doomed to an eternity of parasitic existence, stealing the lifeblood of the very beings I envy most..." etc. Christ, just shut up and kill somebody you pansy vampire. Still, if anyone can make it fun, it's Troika.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

Ah, Vampirs kill plenty, they just don't commit mass genocide or anything because they have to remain a SECKRET. Don't diss 'em.

It's okay, Spazmo's just got these security problems (being french and all) so he just feels it necessary to bash anything that he deems "beneath" him.

That's why the title is "Vampire: MASQUARADE". If you want more combat, there are other games from the same world, like Werewolf: Apocalypse, Mummy: Something or Vampire: Dark Ages.

I'm not asking for more combat; I'm just saying that from what I've seen, V:tM seems a little bit too angsty to me, which detracts from its seriousness.

Spazmo's point is that Vampire: The Masquerade is just utterly geared towards the woe-is-me teenyboppers who think they don't fit in for various reasons, dress in black, and talk about death a whole lot. He's got a good point considering how they describe vampires as being emotionless, clinging to their former selves for the whole humanity thing while at the same time they dress up in gothic garb and look like fruitcakes.

If they're trying to blend in with humanity, especially in modern times, what the hell is up with the gothic punk shit?

The whole setting, especially the modern part of it, seems to be a metaphor for these twerps with a little, I'm really powerful ego stroking tossed in for good measure.

Vampire: The Masquerade is a table top roleplaying game, foo' - as is Werewolf: Apocalypse, Mummy: Something or Vampire: Dark Ages. The computer version is very similar to what the game plays like (minus the live action vampire sechs that is). So why the argument?

Well, I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with on this one. I hope they do something decent with it. I enjoyed the first game, up to a point, since there were aspects of it which were sadly lacking....hopefully this one will be different :)
