More Cryptic Black Isle Chatter

Post by Mad Max RW »

[ -> N/A]

I got word of more mysterious Fallout 3 talk at the Interplay boards. One of the Black Isle folks started up a topic discussing AI controlled CNPCs. Here’s a bit on that:

Things I'd like to see for combat stuff:

NO EF-ING BURSTS IN MY (or any other friendlies) BACK (or front, or side)!!!!
Formations - Just like you'd think, everyone walking around and trying to stay in a line/box/wedge/whatever formation.
Ambushes - Sending one person out to draw the enemy to the rest of the party where much death ensues (for the enemy).
Standing orders - Things like, "Always cover me." or, "Always use Stimpacks on me/yourself/our allies." or "Run when at half health." and the like.
Combat orders - Perhaps tied to the Leadership skill/Charisma stat. It would allow the player to tell CNPCs what to do in a fight (fire on my target, scatter, retreat, heal me/my target, etc., etc.) Maybe even have perks that award new/special/unique combat orders? How well they follow orders could be based on their morale vs. your Leadership skillz/perks.
What should CNPCs be doing when they're not in combat? Just play idle animations? Random floats? Talk to each other? Repair equipment? Use stimpacks? Use drugs? Automatically check for locked doors/containers and lockpick them? Always walk around in formation? Search through ground piles/corpses and pick up ammo people in the party are using and hand 'em out? Pickpocketing townies?

Now I'm all glad to see devs asking about FO3, but I do wish they'd stop doing it at IPLY. When you ask those asshats for advice, you get games like Fallout 2. I mean, shit, does anyone here want to see one of ShadowPaladin's brain farts make it into Fallout 3?
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

I personally think it means nothing. Interplay probably told these guys to start talking about Fallout 3 to help take the pressure off FOBOS.

If I ever see any of ShadowPaladin's ideas implemented in any game I play, I am going to burn the company that made the game down.

Heh yeah.

I recently imagined IPLY making that ass FO:POS game xeplicitly so that'd we'd bitch about it,and when FO3 came with somewhat decent proppsals - at least ones we wouldn't feel skullfucked with. then we'd be all happy and shit because we've grown used to inferior products.

In some languages, "ShadowPaladin" translates into something like "DimPutz".

There's problems with that boy, and that's my best approximation of them.

In such an event that you mention, I think I'd help by staking that dimwit onto a cross and using him to ignite the fire.

Honestly, that could be it. I've seen more logical and forthright things done by both Derek Smart and Romero combined than what Interplay has done.

Now working on Fallout: New Undermountain!

They promise to spend only a year on this title - only a year less than the original Descent to Undermountain!

I must be one of the scant few that Loved both Fallout 1 & 2. Anyhoo...
NO EF-ING BURSTS IN MY (or any other friendlies) BACK (or front, or side)!!!!
I cannot even imagine Fallout without friendly burst fire incidents.
Not sure how I feel about all this. I wouldn't want Fallout 3 to become some super tactical game. I always liked the fact that the tag along NPC's were very seperate from my character. I wouldn't want to start thinking of them as some sort of military/mercenary squad. Fallout 2 seemed to be going in the right direction with just the general behavior settings. I especially liked how not all of the Possible behavior settings were available to certain npc's...it gave them character. I do not want it to go any farther than that, I can't imagine playing Fallout with automatons doing everything I tell them to. (no I don't count Tactics as a true Fallout game) I hope there is no such thing as a Leadership skill in Fallout...ever.

As for ambushes it would be nice if you could convey to your comrades what you intend to do, but I don't think you should be able to have them be the ones to lure anyone. That should always fall to the main character to do.

Grey_Ghost
Just some people wandering around the wasteland trying to survive, not some Elite Tactical Squad made up of people from random walks of life.

You guys having a barbeque? Count me in.

Anyway, NPCs are supposed to be individuals, and as such I wouldn't expect them to mechanically follow orders in or out of the heat of the battle. A refinement of Fallout 2's system would do well.

Heh, yeah. We're nope playing a lam CT game here... Freindly Fire is something that adds a nice touch in FO - albeit it was overdone (ie: hapenned too often) given thjat you couldn't have your NPCs in any formation.

If you have formations though then there's no more need to remove Firendly Fire as your stupidity is only your own. Regarding formations, they're all NPCs with character, so some NPCs you probably shouldn't be able to "control" as well as others - this goes in pretty much a similar statment regarding yelling orders which I would appreciate (ie: change formation, tell someone to move back, simple stuff like that).

Umm... don't you decide whether you want to shoot your own friends in the back with burst? Keep that in!

The other ideas are goood though.

I want to be able to give my NPCs commands or suggestions, but they might or might not choose to listen depending on their situation and personality.

Like Vic, I'd be able to tell him to do practically anything, he's my slave.

Instead of relying some leadership skill, maybe it could be charisma, but I think it should depend mainly on the actual NPC.

Also, the game should be playable without NPCs. I don't want to have to have any to survive. Although having some guys around to help would be nice, it shouldn't be essential.

if they really try and concentrate on this, and also take some tips from the community, FO3 might just be the best fallout ever (besides FO for origionality)

i hope they do try, i need more fallout.

If they really are talking about Fallout 3 here(which I hope they're not), then they seem to be a bit lost. Those questions would be appropriate to ask if they're making a new Fallout: Tactics. At this point, anything related to PC and Fallout make me optimistic. I'm getting more and more interested about Van Buren. Could it be FOT2?

No, they only produde RPGs and they are talking about Rpgs issues; whatever van Buren is it will have a single character control, and one that can make generic orders to all the NPC`s, not to one in particular, and then they can accept the orders or not, depending on the new "trust" modifiers and charisma of our character.
