Concept designer Brendan McCarthy spoke with SFX Magazine about his current involvement in the forthcoming Mad Max: Fury Road. Let’s get right to it:

”I've always loved Mad Max 2:The Road Warrior. It was the pulp fiction of the 80's in a way. It's become such an icon of a certain period of time. It's one of the greatest action movies ever made. I think they accidentally managed to tap into the hero myth - you know, to set up resonances with lots of different cultures - and you can see this by the way Max is regarded slightly differently throughout the world. With the third movie they tried to manufacture this feeling and it just didn't work, so I said to George that we ought to try and recapture that spirit without selling out to Hollywood ideals. The good thing is he can basically do what he likes with it, the franchise has made so much money.”
“I get my ideas from everywhere. I got a lot of inspiration recently from the middle ages, for instance. I got interested in heraldry and it led me on from there. You'll see a definite influence in the next Mad Max movie too.”

Sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. I can’t wait to see his work. I had heard that production on Mad Max 4 had been paused because of the War in Iraq. I'm assuming that production has resumed?
I cant wait to see this new one, Road Warrior is definately my fav of the 3, I'm glad they are returning to that "atmosphere" over the crap they threw up and served us with Thunderdome. Dear god, what a horrid movie!
I think the subtle touches to the setting were one of the biggest things that made Road Warrior the classic it is, I'm looking forward to seeing more of that.
However, I will be outraged if they go and give him another bad-ass vehicle only to have it blow up again, I still cry everytime I see that scene![icon_cry ](./images/smilies/icon_cry.gif)

Against the grain
That where I'll stay
Swimmin up stream...
I maintain against the grain!

I think they pretty much treated the character as just another 80's action hero in another action adventure franchise - which he wasn't.
If only they'd listened to Tina, the film would have been much better.
