What are the 'Military Base' origins?
In Fallout 1, The Glow was the FEV research facility. According to all the dialogue I've read, it's where the Brotherhood of Steel originated. They were the security force there, left after they shot the scientists and headed for the bunker.
What I can't find however, is how the 'Military Base' or 'the Vats' got FEV and what their role in the world was, pre-Fallout (IE: before the Great War). I'm hoping I've missed something, so can anyone fill me in?
All I know is this (in brief):
- FEV moved to The Glow (Marisposa Military Base) to continue research.
- Maxson shoots the scientists.
- Nukes come raining down and blow up the Glow.
- Maxson heads the exodus to form the BoS.
- Time passes -
- BoS younguns head off to find the Glow, get there and die.
- Time passes -
- Richard Grey and Harold, members of a caravan company, head off to find out where the mutants are coming from.
- They find the 'Military Base' and the vats.
- Grey gets dipped and becomes the Master.
- Harold gets knocked out and can't remember anything, but later moves to the Hub.
- Time passes -
- The Master (Richard Grey) starts successfully making mutants.
- The Master heads to the Cathedral so he has more room to grow.
I've read a lot of dialogue files and my brain hurts. So, what did I get wrong and what am I missing?

Mariposa Military Base is not the Glow - it's the Military Base! The Glow was their first base, then the scientists moved to Mariposa to proceed with research on human subjects. Maxson rebelled after he learned what was happening in Mariposa, killed all the sceintists and then the soldiers from the base went to the Lost Hills bunker and formed the Brotherhood we all know and love.
Do your homework again, man!

Ahhh, okay, I've been reading it all wrong. Reading the raw text files is annoying when you can't place them. Heh.
I knew they built a new facility for FEV research to replace the old one, but I figured that new one was "The Glow" after reading ROBCTRL.MSG and thinking that it was for a terminal in the Glow (that's the terminal that says "this facility is still under construction [Click!]"), instead of correctly placing it in the Maripose Military Base. Thanks for that. I was almost having a heart attack and wondering where the hell the vats came from.

I think (don't quote me)
FEV was developed in a Vault (the glow)
It was moved to Mariposa for more research
BOS rebelled
BOS went to the Millitary base and died
Harold and Grey went to the Glow
Gray and Harold were attacked by robots (hence my thought that it was the glow, but I forgot the robots in the Cathedral basement, which might have been at Mariposa)
Gray got dipped, Harold likely didn't but just got amnesia and radiated
Thats my take on it. I don't read dev files or most of the bibles, but thats what I got from playing the game/discussing it

Well, the millitary base is heavily armed. It is reasonably safe to assume when they left to find the muties, they went there
In the game as well, it says scouts were sent north. To Mariposa.
Check in the game and in the bibles for more. I can't remember, I haven't played Fallout since I lost my disk, nine months ago

does it say that in the FOB? i dont beleive you, esp. because if they moved it to the military base for more research, why would they leave it behind?SeanDMan wrote:And there are vats of FEV in the Glow too...
and why would the master have made the military base the mutie making place if he was transformed/dipped in the glow?

You're all wrong, but only on small details. Here's the dirt.
The Glow used to be the West-Tek research facility. West-Tek was a high tech company that developed biotechnology, energy weapons and power armour for the US government. FEV was created at West-Tek and numerous tests--ranging from flatworms to apes--were done at West-Tek. The Army decided to test on humans and also decided to use the Mariposa military base for this. All FEV research was moved to Mariposa, where human testing began.
The soldiers guarding Mariposa were unaware of the nature of these experiments. Shortly before the bombs, they found out and their leader, who took over after the real commander committed suicide, killed the head scientist. They then deserted from the Army and seceded from the Union. The bombs fell almost the next day. Later, having surmised that humans could survive outside, they all left the accursed Mariposa base for the Lost Hills bunker and started the BOS soon after. It should be noted that only military personnel and their families were moved. Civilians and their kin were left behind to their own fates "pending orders from their command structure" (paraphrased). A few BOS renegades left to find technology at the Glow and never returned.
In FO2, while the Enclave was exploring the mainland, they stumbled accross Mariposa. They got in and started excavating FEV for testing purposes. Shortly after getting a sample back to the Oil Rig, the FEV in the base mutated the slave miners stolen from the surrounding area (namely Redding) into super mutants, who killed many of the Enclave troops stationed at the military base/mine. The Enclave hastily retreated from the area and sealed the mutants inside the base, until the Chosen One foolishly stumbled in.
So there you are.

It's a joke, right? It's the same base, after it was destroyed by the Vault Dweller and after the Enclave visited it to get FEV. It was mentioned in previous posts.PIPBoy2161 wrote:Hey, what about the military base in Fallout 2, next to San Fran. where did it come from????? Anyone wanna enlighten me?
Maybe you're thinking about the Sierra Army Depot? But it's near New Reno. Just a guess.

The base wasn't destroyed completly after Fallout 1...
Spazmo's post can clear it all up... Did you even bother to read the thread before posting?
