Wasteland Half-Life RC1 released!

Post by Kreegle »

[ -> N/A]

The fateful day has arrived, ladies and gentlemen! Behold, the latest Wasteland Half-Life update:

THE WASTES RC1: RELEASED!

I think this is the longest time there has ever been between news posts. But... Wasteland HL, after so effing long, is finally done! I am updating the download section as we speak and will be adding new mirrors as I upload the file. To be blunt; this probably isnt the WHL (or TW or whatever you wish to call it) you guys have been expecting. The release notes actually go in pretty big detail; but I suppose this was a long time coming. Its not that the build is buggy, I think i did an okay job of making it stable. It is just incomplete in spots, and makes the mod fairly rough around the edges. I will try to get a community update support thing going, wether it be a bug tracker or similar, and if there is a big splurge of input I may try to fix those bugs.
Oh my!

You can read the rest of the update here (the release of the source code is discussed), and you can snatch the file from here (it's a fileplanet link, and it's not working for me at the moment, but give it your best shot). Cheers Ibbz!

Well, a completed mod-project is always an achievement. For a moment I thought this mod was never going to be finished, so this came as a surprise to me. I'd like to try it out, but I can't on this comp. Oh well, I hope the development continues and we'll see a bunch of new patches.

Well 'The Wastes' is finished and stable, however it is still a tad buggy and isn't feature complete. Lots of Krudds beautiful models haven't yet got ingame. Hopefully another coder will be aquired to finish off the Wastes teams work and to get all the models and sounds together.

Wow, this really sucks. The maps are awesome, but the rest is crap. I understand one guy was working on it for the last several months, but with all the things wrong I'd rather play beta 2.1.

You no longer have the kind of customization in WHL. Firing animations is very jerky. They're 2-3 frames on average. The sawed off shotgun is the biggest disappointment so far. The amount of player models was cut down a lot. No Mad Max :P The old choose your weapon menu from 2.1 was easier and faster to get into the game. And you can't swap duel weapons around anymore. The sawed off/berreta was fucking awesome. Now your stuck with generic shit.

As far as I can tell there's still no teamplay. Only deathmatch. I wasn't too surprised Release Candidate 1 would suck so hard. After years of nothing, and a team built around a revolving door, you don't come to expect much.

I could've told you not to expect anything special.
The team arguments got in the way of solid development and proper design.

Maybe I'll reinstall halflife to give it a run

I'm finding a hell of a lot of mapping glitches. There's several spots to get permanently stuck, many areas opening into space, and it's easy to get to areas your obviously not meant to reach. Being able to climb out and see the map from the outside is just lazy design. One of the maps in particular had a couple unfinished areas. Another has a cop car with serious clipping issues on the left side. So many loose ends that can be fixed rather quickly.

some of you ungrateful bastards complaining should be happy its even out, what with the state that some departing members left things in, its lucky gage was even able to get this thing out the door as far as some of the content goes.

I love the maps and weapons however, but the player models aren't as good as I thought I'd be...although they were being revamped at one point and time. Shame the revamps never got compelted as they were rather awesome looking too. Eh well.

But all the bugs I've seen so far are so minor they don't drastically affect the gameplay much...and Gage has promised if people bring them up to him, he will try and fix as much as he can.

But hey, at least its better than Devastation...and out before Fallout 3 and Duke Nukem Forever, so at least one of the three things you never thought you'd see is finally here. :D

It is better than Devastation. I give ya that. But crap that doesn't smell so bad is still crap.

And I won't judge a game based on any circumstances. If the team was full of idiots and the game sucks, the game still sucks. Blackdog, over the past few years you developed this blind following to wasteland halflife. Stop being such a god damn follower and judge it for what it is.

I think the point here is expectations...

I assumed that it would be a stable limited feature build that would be buggy but playable. and its just that, it is not a final release the team wanted to happen, it is more of a stable alpha build that is released so the commuity can work on.

Which part of the news release did you miss?

If they knew it was going to be this feature complete, the only use anybody could make out of it is the content for other mods and whatever. I would be amazed to see any patches for this. There might be a couple small ones, but people will move on. RC1 obviously wasn't made for the public. It's for you crazy followers at the WHL community. Think of it as closure.

I'd like to emphasis how pathetic it is to see 3 years go by and we're pretty much back to the first beta. That's from a regular gamer's point of view.

Now, given the circumstances, it was very bold to release anything instead of cancelling the mod, deleting everything, and closing the mod's homepage. I can respect that. Unfortunately, my gamer's side is not forgiving.

I have to say that I don't mind The Wastes
It is a mod that you do download for free and is provided "as is"
I do have both WHL and TW installed
Sure TW is buggy but it is a public beta, much like The Opera is, both mods had bugs but were still fun to play IMO
TW has been out for a week or less and the fan made patches are already about to make a third release!

If anything the mod will get a proper official patch in time, maybe even including mixed akimbos, I miss them too
And if we are lucky, some new ppl will join the team and update the mod as time goes on
The only other alternative would be to release RC1 to the forum ppl only and that is kind of a cruel thing to do
There are quite a few new servers running RC1 and some new quality forum members too
This is one of the few mods with 25 or so weapons which are different and need to be handled differently
So yes RC1 is bugged but RC1.1 or whatever should do it justice

P.S. I wish Krudd would make his work available to someone neutral on the team/forum, I think ubarpants was the gobetween I'm not sure?
P.S.S. And Max you do have some good points but there is a bugs board that details bugs and mentions most if not all that you mention
And these bugs will get fixed in time
