Fallout Yurop announced

One of the quotes from the Megaton site I was most impresssed with was the blatant statement that although the game was set in a post appocalyptic world, it did not exist in the Fallout universe. Which meant that he can include aliens and cyborgs and whatever else he likes that fits into his idea of game design.
Sometimes I think the Fallout universe should just be left alone. I like the engine and the skills system and the combat and the dialogue, and all of those elements could be used to create a really good game.
I'm not sure I understand why talented people would want to continue with the Fallout universe (which in my mind ceases in the beautiful closing scenes of FO1) when they could create something completely new, with new politics, new art (which from the one screenshot they seem quite skilled at,) and new gameplay, exploring under-utilized perks and skills. By creating their own universe they seperate themselves from criticism that certain elements contradict other story elements, that it doesn't have a a necessary feel.
It understand that it makes sense to use Fallout as a starting point, given all the art assets and rule set, but the gamr (gameworld) could be wholly their own, outside of the Fallout universe, without trying to add to the (ever confusing) Fallout canon, which would appear to me to me to be far more rewarding.
I'm excited about this project, not because it may add new content to Fallout and its game world, but that it will based upon a game design that I readily enjoy.
Besides, I send the best of wishes and luck to the devs.
