Anybody else ever cracked the core on a processor?

Post by Insane Koolaid Man »

Yes, that's right, I cracked the damn core on my AMD Athlon XP last night trying to put the damn heatsink on it. Really pissed me off, so now I'm typing this on my friend's Compaq Presario while I wait for my new AMD Athlon XP 2500+ to arrive.

So, anybody else manage to crack the core on their processor or have a story to tell about somebody else who did?

I use a pentium too, and the only hardcore thing I ever did to my computer was put in a Firewire card.

Also what do you mean you cracked it? it must been one hella crappy processor. lewl

Well, when I put in a new hard drive in the computer I had 3 computers ago, I managed to jar the power supply loose and it ended up falling out of its spot and broke some of the computer's internal organs.

More recently, when I put in my spiffy new GeForce4 card, a screw from the mounting brace of my old card managed to jump out of its hole and went under the motherboard. Took about an hour of "shake shake shake" to get the dern thing out.

But no, never busted a processor.

At the darkness inside.
Our emotions always find us
Regardless of where we hide.

No, but I've been afraid of cracking the core. I might not be using the right voodoo, but it seems like some of these heat sinks are tough to put on.

Yes, I was using the Thermaltake Volcano 9, which by the way, sucks ass, and it is quite the bitch to get on. From now on, I'll be using the stock heatsink, or something that's easier than the V9 to get on.

And to whoever asked about cracking the core, I didn't "crack" it in the normal definition, but more or less chipped a portion of one of the corners off.

Use a copper shim and you won't have to worry about it. Unless it's a barton core (though there may be a redesigned version available by now).

I know exactly what you meen, those thermaltake coolers suck ass for that reason. I ended up getting a square one, forget the brand name tho, I'll try to look it up for you.

I thought I was gonna break the mainboard when I tried putting one of those thermaltakes on.

hahaha, u newb3

u can't use brute force, especially on processors, if it doesn't fit and click then don't force it

and there's nothing wrong with thermaltake, i have a dragon orb 3, weighs bout a pound and sounds like a 747 but keeps the fucker cool

unfortunetly, i've heard of this before, and not just with amd either, while i was working with dell, i had recieved a few calls in two years where even qualified dell engineers had destroyed teh processor while repairing a machine, it happens. So long as you dont have to pay for it its fine. the only advice i can give is the same as all the other guys, if the glove doesnt fit, you must aquit, ie: be careful and go easy with the next one.

Well, actually, I'd installed the thing around six times in the past, what I didn't notice, was that one of the pads on the processor that's supposed to keep the core safe from the whole crushing force of the heatsink, was about three quarters missing. I noticed that when I was examining it last night.

But anyways, no problems, got my Athlon XP 2500+ on Friday, and right now it's running at 2800+ speeds on the stock heatsink and fan.

STFU n00bz0r!!!

It depends on what you use anyway... usually with pentium CPU-fans, you have to somewhat force it on.

The side of the fan was so hard to trigger on, that I was scared shit-less of breaking my cpu! After a series of over-heat chrashes I was convinced that it had to be forced on. Didn't crack it.

An AMD-user friend of mine cracked his CPU though... gone over to Pentium.

I've done that on purpose before. On a pentium 1 piece of shit. With a hammer.
