My work is pretty dehumanizing too but I make over $25/ hour. I guess that makes it more worthwhile? Oh and its engineering.

Civil engineering but you can makes lots of money in any kind of engineering. If you can handle the math and science in college then its the way to go. Even better if you get a master's or doctor's degree but I just have a bachelor's.

I'm a student/dumbass. But I aspire to be a programmer one day. My future looks bleak.

Yea I probably want to get into graphick design or writing or summat you know? Something creative and not too uptight. As for making money, I make a lot of it doing odd jobs (nothing formal like delivering papers though) as well as trying to milk people for cash whenever I can. I'd make a good con man.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Go to some town and sell them a bunch of musical instruments, then when they have gained your trust as a musical conductor, run away with their money!

No, most cities are already built and that's more in the realm of urban planning. Not really a good field to be in. I design roadways, bridges, that sort of thing.

Yeah, most of that is what has to be redesigned based on the amount of traffic among other variables. Most roads get reconstructed the way they were originally but you always look at alternative materials to see if there are cheaper ways to build them. There are a few areas engineers get involved from the surveying, to the cad design, to the construction. My current job is working on the cad design, creating plans and coming up with cost estimates. I like working on the construction end more instead of in the office which gets boring.

Its not too tough for most engineers to get a job here. Roads and bridges will always need to be reconstructed. A lot of industrial engineers are screwed because alot of that is being scaled back or sent to China. And as fun as learning some things are, there is little chance that you'll get a high paying job in History (Sorry OTB!) But teachers will always be needed.

Get a good handle on what classes you either enjoy or are good at and then check out the career opportunities for that type of knowledge. If you want to get started in Civil Engineering, look for a job on a survey crew. You usually can make decent money and you get to work outside all of the time. You should have a good understanding of math, geometry, and trigonometry.

Electrical engineering is probably the best choice for higher paid jobs or chemical engineering. I'd guess the average starting salary for engineers just out of college in the US is around $35,000.

Used to work in a paper factory, as a casual for one of the contracter groups there. $15 an hour and was working full time (had to forge my times, to avoid getting in trouble for working too much).

Pro: Got to use all the nice big power tools, and the pay was decent.

Con: The hours, 9 hours a day sucks.

I had to stop working because of uni though :x

I get $8.38 an hour unloading trucks at my local Wal-Freakin'-Mart. I'm also going to skule for 'puter programming, although after reading JJ86's posts, I might be changing it  (j/k, I'm too far into my degree program to be changing. Two more semesters and I'll have my Associate's Degree in Computer Information Systems! Yaynowwhat?)

Pro's of my actual job: None. Well, I guess a semi-flexible schedule is good (the days I work, not the hours. Those are etched in stone). Pay is decent, consider unloading trucks isn't the most mentally-intensive activity in the werld :D

Con's: Don't even get me started.

EDIT: Blasphemous typos.

Regardless of where we hide.
