Apathy speaks volumes. Don't take damage into consideration. (except for the fact that big guns typically spray an area, as do grenades, and mines, explosives, etc.. typically do high damage).
Consider the difficulty you have making use of these weapons, and how much you hate it when the enemy uses them against you.

Hand to Hand and melee are only good under at least one of the following conditions:
1. You have no other options (ouch!)
2. One hit kills
3. A lot more damage than your best long range weapon
4. Could also be good for conserving ammunition against weaker enemies
Throwing knives and such were ideal in the later Jagged Alliance games. Too bad they suck in the regular FOT campaign.

RE
Except I think the turn based combat in the Jagged Alliance games is better :)
Although I have not really tried it for FOT outside of multiplayer. Perhaps I should give it a try?
I made a mod for JA2: Unfinished Business. Had a somewhat sci-fi effect to it. I remember thinking of doing an entire campaign based on it, but decided the editor was too limited (think I got tired of just killing the same person over and over again).
The most effective way to take out enemies in JA2, is with Sydney and/or other throwing experts at night time. If you can hit an enemy with a knife before they see you, they're pretty much dead.
Fox has always been my fav merc. With dexterity and marksmanship being the only two determinators of accuracy, she is easily the best marksman since marksmanship is, by far, easier to improve than dexterity. (plus she can fire two smgs at once!)
And I love the explosives and mines in the Jagged Alliance games. They are my favorite when it comes to that. Although I think Fallout Tactics kinda wins over that aspect, as you can more easily make use of them. (but I really really REALLY love to blow open chunks in walls in the JA games).
Oops, sorry, guess I kinda went off topic :)
Its too bad there is little to no stealth effects to be had in FOT. But it makes it ideal for other styles of play. Too bad FOT never really took the opportunity to incorporate one style that well. Although I must say, it is fun and does give you a lot of options. And sneaking always works vs a sleeping opponent :)

Thanks for that bit on JA. I will use them. Where is your mod?(I will play it eventually, but can't now. I got it from a mag that had only the first cd-rom. To get the second I have to wait till they make it available in one of their mags or go piracy software, not really an option).
I think FoT has great potential that we just can't use for various reasons. If I had much more time and the will(which currently I don't) you could see wonders.

RE
Im working on hopefully a really good campaign for FOT.
As for my JA2 mod, it only works with Unfinished Business. You should be able to find it on a Jagged Alliance 2 mods download page. I think there is one named Bear-something or such. Would be a good place to start looking.
I heard there was also a new campaign made for JA2: Unfinished Business. I think it was called Deidrana Lives and I also heard a lot of work went into it. Might be worth checking that out too.
Plus for the original JA2, there's a modified saved game called Real War if you want a nice challenge. Its basically like trying to fight a war with just your few little people.. there are bad guys everywhere :)
