That one's much worse

Way i see it, it's roughly just Strategy, RPG, Adventure games and the like that improves your language, since there's often a lot of dialogue involved in games like that. Playing games, reading english books, surfing the web even posting in forums such as these are the main reasons for my english language skills.

As I only play games in English and had been reading/writing/speaking it for 20 years when I started playing PCs games - NO.

If english isn't your mother language, then I think games help a lot. Every friend of mine who plays games have better english skills than those who don't play.

Er, no.

Playing games generally reduces your language and social skills.

Pacman certainly makes a great variety of beeping noises, but -- even in RPG's -- you won't find much dialogue that would 'improve' anyone's language... unless they have the communication skills of a chimp.

Growing up as a wee lad with those old Sierra adventure games helped me sort out some of my spelling and comprehension - definitely. If you couldn't read or write, you couldn't play... and they were the most popular games around at the time.

Depends on the game, really. Well-written stuff (like RPGs/Fantasy) have some pretty interesting and complex dialogue.

My point exactly. I had one test this morning. I was bored to death for that one hour I had to make the test, 'coz they won't let anyone out before one hour has passed.

But I never read to english test. They are just so easy and I give a full credit to games and net for teaching me. If you play for 5+ years, you got to remember something. Maybe I could start reading german and play all my games in german...I might learn it pretty quickly considering to the hours I spend in front of my screen.

And not shite like "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?", but great games, like Fallout 16, Deus Ex 11 and other such mega franchises. No more going to school. No more war, even, as everyone would be plugged constantly into their computers playing games in the "name" of education (but really entertainment!). [Deactivating prediction goggles]

Well I grew up playing Robotron, Stargate, Missile Command, etc. Needless to say those games really have no influence on speaking or language skills. Text adventures I played on the C64 on the other hand are completely helpful. If u cant type coh3r3ntly or spell, you are going to get nowhere. Any other games, well let's say if you want to polish up on language skills you might want to get off the computer and visit your old pal - Real Life!
