H-Bomb Creator Dies At 95

Post by Mad Max RW »

[ -> N/A]

It’s a very sad day when the man who created one of the most devastating weapons not used in war passes on. Edward Teller, “father of the H-bomb”, died Tuesday 95 years young. A little on Teller’s history:

A naturalized U.S. citizen born in Hungary, Teller was a key member of a group of top scientists who fled Hitler's Germany and ended up working on the Manhattan Project, the secret program that developed the atomic bomb.

After the war, Teller pressed the case for a continued strong national defense, persuading President Harry Truman of the need for the far more powerful hydrogen bomb.

The United States detonated the first H-bomb on the Pacific atoll of Eniwetok in November 1952. It was 2,500 times more powerful than the atomic weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, which prompted Japan's surrender and brought World War II to a close…

…The H-bomb, never used in warfare, was the linchpin of the "MAD" (mutually assured destruction) defense doctrine that kept the United States and Soviet Union at bay during the Cold War.

Spotted at <A HREF=http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... _teller_dc target=_blank>Yahoo! News.

There's a roofer guy I know who was at an H-bomb test way back and the worst part was the sound. In his own words "The sound...it was something else. It was the most godawful thing I ever heard."

yep... Teller Ede was born in Hungary. First he emigrated to Germany, then he moved to the USA. He took part in the Manhattan-project, creating the first-atomic bomb, and after it the H-bomb... hew wrote a lot of theories, and it is possible that without huim, there won't be any atomic power plants... and no Fallout...

Dunno, but I'm pretty sure Leni Reifenstahl would want to film it.

Oh wait, she's dead now, too...

(Died Monday at the age of 101, for those of you that missed it.)

She was injured in a copter crash years ago, but the reports of her death were greatly exagerated.

As to what took so long...Mengele let her in some gnarly ass Nazi secrets of immortality. They got them from Ark of the Covenant while poking around Egypt back in the '30s. The ritual involved the Holy Grail, a bucket full of Listerine, two enema bags, three virgin slave girls...oh, and a wine-sodden merkin.

(I want Spielberg to die horribly, btw.)
