...Yeah, to answer Hammer's question: that's a fine speed to download and upload, considering you're not sending pirated copies of Warcraft III all over the net or anything. And fuck you people, by broadband is teh gay. Goddamn "WE'LL PUT YOU ON THE SERVER WITH EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE TRI-COUNTY AREA HOW DO YOU LIKE 100 K DOWNLOADS???"

128k upload isn't much, but it's better to leech anyway

What is more important in gaming upload or download? Like, what effects ping times?

Both do. Since you're sending information about what you're doing in your current game, is pretty important...
So upload is probably most important...

Gotcha - 128 upload is pretty good for a game though, right? I mean i'm gonna see a difference with ping times then what I see now since im on 56k.

1 mbit/128 kbit is amply sufficient for online gaming. Faster connections are only really useful when downloading big stuff off the Interweb and even then, what you've got does just fine. For regular gaming and surfing, you're set.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

You should be fine, unless you're expecting to play EverQuest and have a perfect ping...

And yes, the difference should be more than obvious. Staggering should be the word.

On Charter Cable. My upload speed is supposed to be 256 kbs.

Rogers, huh? My mom has Bell Sympatico Hi-Speed, and I don't think it's real DSL - you have to connect manually, and it has a USB thingie that plugs into the phone jack. I've been debating getting Rogers, since I love me some hi-speed cable access.

That said, I know fuck-all about computers. Christ, it takes me half an hour to set up a PS2.

Is such a high differance between upload and download like unhealthy? Speaking from the same perspective as Hammer gamewise. Also, isn't it also important when gaming online to be with people of around the same speed? Like I notice that if I play with people with 56Ks that I get lag.

Actually expecting to play Planetside with a perfect ping, seeing as how I ping 188 on 56k my expectations are high.

The reason some people get higher or lower scores is because cable can get bogged down during high load hours.

I think that's one advantage of DSL, doesn't matter how many people are logged onto the same IP. But what does matter is how long of a line it goes through from your house to the nearest routing station, longer lines mean deteriorated performance.

I'm at RIT and its not uncommon for me to get 10Mbps through the LAN and I can download as fast as anything will let me. But we have a dual OC3 :).

A faster DSL connection, Often refered to as SDSL (They are one and the same, right?) I've eseen speeds of up to 457 KB down (from Microsoft.com, of course) on an ADSL/SDSL. Either way, I have the fastest DSL connection available in my area. Guess why? My dad works for SBC!

BTW, taliren, anybody with decent broadband will go as fast as almost anything will let you. Most severs/download centers will top out at about 35-65 KB.

Icabod, you are dead on on all fronts in all fronts in your post. However, a big part of the reason average cable users get such horendous servic eis that people use "Cable Uncapping software" that makes it so that that cable users hogs as much of the connection point's bandwidth as the cable lines can carry. However, cable does have an advantage for some special cases: Low end servers. Due to cable's relatively low cost and high upload speeds (Cable's upload is roughly equal to it's down, while DSL's up is at max 16.6 K ) it is perfect for low cost, low end servers. SDSL usually costs about $80/mo., but gets equal down/up bandwidth, so around 450K up and down.

EDIT: Wolfman, are you shure it's not the other way around? And in answer to your question, no. Having a high download speed is essential to good pings. You only need about 15-17 K up for perfect pings on almost every game. Unless you're hosting a server, that is. Remember: You aren't sending that much data to the server, but you're recieving a helluva lot.
KillaKilla's logic:
FOT and FO: BOS weren't FO at all!........... 1. I am nobody
DOGMEAT is God. Never dispute this!........ 2. Nobody is perfect
Up and coming hardware nerd.................. 3. Hence I am perfect

asymmetric dsl.... sdsl on the other hand is, surprise surprise, symmetric.
basically, the difference is that sdsl's downstream is as fast as its upstream rate(hence "symmetric"), but adsl's have a relatively slow upload rate.
