My first reply vanished due to IE crashing on me. It took me about an hour to carefully think this over. Guess I' ll have to start all over again. From now on I' m copy-pasting every single post. Grrr!
Sorry Max, I' ll try to ellaborate my point but understand that I' m not fully fluent in the english language since it is not my maternal one. And I might say first that it is possible that I have unluckily expressed myself earlier. So here goes....
I knew the film was actually fiction interwoven with historical events and facts and I' ve got to agree with you on that. The first part of the film was actually the best part although I did find it a pitty that they didn' t delve deeper into the sentiments the colonials experienced or prior events such as the Boston Tea party which would make the film all the more believable. They show us ol' Mel cooling down the colonials' temper but they didn' t show us that many of them instead of opposing the redcoats or being indesicive actually colaborated with the brittish crown. Ok, maybe there' s that young lieutenant, but that' s it.
Revenge is a powerfull motivation, true. But the way you state it there means indeed they would kill every Brittish soldier, 'cause they wanted revenge. But it didn' t go that way. Some were in for revenge, some for freedom, others for more obscure reasons. Besides, going to war with a regiment full of vengeance seeking gung-ho types wouldn' t be a wise decission and neither a tactical advantage.
It is horrible how they depict the redcoats as either young, cowardly or inexperienced soldiers at some points while these troops where feared all over the world at that time. More of these things in the film make it all that more unbelievable. Either way, they should' ve made this film either more historically correct or more fictional. Instead you' ve got a butchered patrimonage (don' t know if this term is correct) and a half witted fictional story that tries hard to be accurate but fails. I never liked Braveheart to much neither.
I' m not bitching about patriotism here, I even consider myself being somewhat of a patriot (although when saying you' re a patriot out here in Belgium means most of the time that you' re associated with the rascist right-wing extremist party, which I' m not) and believe that every citizen should show some for his nation or cultural heritage. What botheres me is that these last 20 to 30 or so years so-called patriotism has been whored out by many US action flicks, most of the time used under the ruse of making them all the more appealing to the audience. f.e. Rambo 3, the Delta Force horrors, Windtalker(s?) and such. But then again, maybe I used the wrong word back there.
Make sure that this is not meant as an insult to US residents or citizens of any nation whatsoever. How many non-american or Hollywood made films are there around that are not propaganda films? Why won' t they make a 'patriotic' film from the point of view of the Germans during WW2 or so (would be interesting to watch, I' m not saying I aprove what they did)? The main reason is because something like this will not be tolerated or approved by the largest part of the consumers who are innevitably....US residents. And who' d want to produce a film from which you know he will likely fail due to this? The point is that I' m actually fed up with the fact that almost only american patriotism is tolerated in movies and that I' ve already seen more than enough of those where they use this so-called patriotism as a reason to allow and sell bloodshed.
I hope this helps you somehow understand my point of view.
Mad Max 4 Is NOT Dead
I'm all the way with you Calal.
I'd like to add something tho :
Movies like the Patriot make wars look like a good thing when you win.
Mel lost his son.... but HE WON THE WAR YAY.
Same thing with We Were Soldiers, there's always this moment of joy at the end which make the butchery we watched for 1 hour and a half look good and satisfying, or this cheesy religious or patriotic one-liner.
And there's also the fact that Mel's acting has gone from good to crap in the last few years. God he always has this same face with a cow-like expression.

thats not true at the end of We Were Soldiers their was no saying war was good. The whole movie was about how awful war is.
