l337 JeffK Sp34k
Doesn't it hurt you guys a little on the inside to type like Jeff-K on a regular basis? I'm not singling anyone out...There seems to be a shi-fuck load of JeffK speak going on in all the forums lately by myriad people.
Maybe I'm just not hip with the new internet lingo, but damn...It takes longer to type like a l337 h4*0r than it does to type like a regular person.

Anyone who still likes that crap is probably very slow. It was a stupid fad to begin with. I'm sure something newer, and stupider, will come along though, something that the same idiots who liked l33t-speak will cling onto without questions.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

It's funny for those rare times when you want to appear like a stupid pre-teen wannabe hacker and I keep it to a bare minimum in the Wasteland. Using it all of the time is really fucking annoying and should be grounds for permanent banishment. If I really want to write incomprehensibly, then I'll write in cyrillic.

As soon as I saw "Esperanto" I though of good ol' Bill "all that Shakespearean acting didn't do shit for me" Shatner.ExtremeDrinker wrote:Try Esperanto....It was touted as the language of the future...The new lingua-franca. And now, only William Shatner and a few of his Trekkie followers speak it.
(For those of you that don't know: he actually appeared in a movie that had Esperanto dialogue.)
Esperanto was an interesting idea, but I don't see any time in the near future where the lingua franca is dictated by anything other than a culture's economic dominance. So any attempt to impose a synthetic language to help drop borders will almost undoubtedly fizzle.
I've only met one person that had any training in Esperanto. He was an Art History professor and went to a school for gifted children back in the '60s. They got to do all sorts of things at that school, like work completely at their own pace, w/no formal instruction.
As for l337 sp34kerZ...the only reason to type that way is to make fun of people that type that way. I especially agree w/the time factor. Unless you have some program you're running to x-late your normal key strokes into l337 you're wasting your time. It seems to be a symptom of having nothing worthwhile to say. (Sort of like stupid people invariably have 27 different ways to say "I like that" (e.g. cool, rad, dope, etc.).
OTB
"On the bounce, you apes! Do you wanna live forever?!"
i don't think the jeffk esque "speek" alone was ever that funny... but i'd say it makes e.g. a joke more effective, that is, funnier, if you know how to use it properly. overdoing it is a bit lame, sure. but it can be used to deliver a certain image/message even if there is no humour involved, but i guess noticing these kind of things probably requires a lack of academic education? kreegle for instance could never comprehend this :(Neon Dingo wrote:It's not funny anymore.
megatron is the so far unrivalled champion of this

Lets not forget the originator of the l337 crap: B1FF. He's really the originator of it all. JeffK is a poser compared to B1FF.
And there are a lot more people that type like this in other parts of the board, too...iohkus is on his way to becoming champ, I've noticed.
It's strange and frightening. I may just be an unfrozen caveman from prehistory, but.....Can't we be witty without forcing ourselves into being idiots?

I have to agree with that. Examples from the past are plentifull. Greek and Latin where the revered languages during the Ancient times (use of Latin only declined at the end of the Middle Ages), Morish and Arabic during the Middle Ages (at least for a major part in the Old World), Spanish during the expansionist age or age of discovery and English is the dominant language nowadays.OnTheBounce wrote:(For those of you that don't know: he actually appeared in a movie that had Esperanto dialogue.)

A bit off-topic: really OTB, where did you pick up such ubber-knowledge on cinematography? I have to know. During my two years of filmschool I learned a lot but I still don' t seem to know a fifth of what you know. And it' s not like you encounter a lot of people nowadays who know who Cecile B. Demille is for instance.
He who keeps the old akindled and adds new knowledge is fit to be a teacher.
thamks?ExtremeDrinker wrote:...iohkus is on his way to becoming champ, I've noticed.
I sure as fuck can't, and most people who try to be witty here are fucking tools, I won't mention names because they know who they are.ExtremeDrinker wrote:.....Can't we be witty without forcing ourselves into being idiots?

iokhus uses it too much "out of context"ExtremeDrinker wrote:iohkus is on his way to becoming champ, too, I've noticed.
nah... otherwise Jackass wouldn't be quite as popularIt's strange and frightening. I may just be an unfrozen caveman from prehistory, but.....Can't we be witty without forcing ourselves into being idiots?
Really, though, like I said, l33t sp33k alone isn't funny, but if it's used by a witty person, it can boost the effect of a joke. i find it funny when someone can deliver a certain kind of a joke using l33t, yet most people will just pass it as another "jeffk-ism" that doesn't make sense at all? it does require wit though, otherwise I don't consider it Teh Funnee.
just another form of "humour" i guess

Do you really not know who Douglas Adams and Will Self are? Or are you just trying to get a rise out of me?
Douglas Adams - Author, Radio, Film
Will Self - Author
Both are from UK..Both are funny in a over-the-top jerk sort of way. I lent my girlfriend my copy of The Ultimate Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy...She's turned into the perfect bitch, and she's only about 200 pages into it. Great stuff. Changes your whole outlook on things.
Another book that'll warp your sense of humor is "The Illuminatis Trilogy." It's an amazing book, very well written, and it fucks with your mind.

I like leet speak for rather unusual reasons I suppose. Obviously, it's annoying, and whatnot, ok. But I also like it because (used correctly) it mixes up the english language, which I do anyway on my own. It's just new material for me. I'm all about hating on cliches, and constantly come up with new phrases and use them incessantly until my friends start using them too. leet's been a nice new source of material, especially the acronyms... omfg, omgwtf, gtfo mfing nub, etc etc are all things you can hear me say just around, and it is starting to catch on with the people i'm closest too, much to their dismay. Obviously, since I use it in real life, i'd be using it online too.
so yeah kthxby i r teh winzx so urm ya f of mfer! pwngge
I actually find some literary beauty in leet now, kinda like haiku. Aesthetics in minimalism, or something?
