I'd be more curious as to what fish still existed. Kinda like Blinky out of the Simpsons

As for longer life, perhaps it's just a case of radiation causing a mutation for the better.

Nope, thermometers made in the last few years are filled with alcohol. There are sevral of the mercury ones that are still alive and well and being used, despite numerous attempts to exterminate them.
