From News Of The Weird. After a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge, FBI agent James Hanson III paid a $105 fine and $12,000 in restitution to the Barbary Coast hotel in Las Vegas for a May incident in which he, for some reason that he has yet to make public, fired two shots from his service weapon at a lobster in a walk-in cooler. It was a late-night incident, with no one in the vicinity, but Hanson was captured on a surveillance tape. Hanson was in Las Vegas for an accounting seminar. [Las Vegas Sun, 8-29-03]

An Argument Against Concealed Carry
It seems like when even people who should know better carry guns, strange things happen. Imagine a world where everyone carries guns....

Well it's obvious the lobsters were threatening him.
Point is, even people with extensive training go off the deep end sometimes. Not really an argument against carrying, more of an argument against carrying while wasted, something that's already illegal to do I belive.
These are the guys protecting us? I'll take my chances with a sharp stick and a dirty diaper.

Someone who goes over the deep end with a knife will probably kill someone too. Actually, this strikes me as a fantastic argument for making the point that cops have no magical attributes that make them more likely to use firearms responsibly. In many areas, cops don't even need any kind of college education. Saw a 'Help Wanted' add in the local paper for cops in Topeka, the state capital. You had to be 21, you had to take a test, and you had to have a background check. That's it.Jimmyjay86 wrote:It seems like when even people who should know better carry guns, strange things happen. Most firearms owners with any NRA training are as well trained* as those cops, so there's no reason why we shouldn't have the same self-defense rights that they do.
*Perhaps even better. The police don't learn the four rules like we do.

I hate to disappoint you, but it really doesn't. Those who go through the hassle of getting the concealed carry licenses, which frequently require you to take classes, tend to be the most law-abiding segment of public. They're a boring bunch.Jimmyjay86 wrote:I'm just curious, didn't know concealed carry could have fun implications like being able to shoot lobsters and have running street battles. Maybe this could be a good thing, like the wild west. If life was exciting like that I wouldn't need to play video games.

Plus a lot of states don't even let you carry concealed weapons even if you want to get a license? I'm 99.9% positive I can't here in New York. I am also 99.9% positive that Texas allows you to. Maybe Pennsylvania let's you too? I'm not clear on that one, memory's a bit hazy. Ahh well, anything can be abused so why not outlaw everything? I can't think of a whole lot of things right at the moment that couldn't be used to kill someone, or at least be used in a manner that doesn't fit with public approval, so why not regulate it all while you're taking away the right to conceal guns? Sarcasm^ (I know it doesn't come through clearly online, bleh)
Well, there are different types of concealed carry licenses. Currently, I believe something like 44 states have some kind of license system in place. However nine of those states, including New York, have "may-issue" licenses. This means that it is entirely up to the discretions of the law enforcement as to whether you get a license, even if you pass the background checks. That's why you see guys like Howard Stern packing heat while 'normal' citizens don't have the pivelege. Those other 35 states have what is know as "shall-issue" licenses. In these states, if you apply and meet all the criteria, you get the license.

an excellent argument against allowing people to drive.

well now, i think banning cars/buses/trucks would be a great idea. for the children you know.
35 states issue CCW permits, yet these states have lower crime rates than the states which infringe on my constitutional right. it is also worthy to note that the streets of these fine states are not running with blood. your argument is pompous and weak, in the future i hope you do not waste everyone's time attempting to convince them that it is better to be uprepared and at the mercy of a criminal than to live in a society where you are allowed to defend yourself.

there is an old quote from a supreme court justice that states something to the effect that breaking a law shall result in punishment in the penal system, not the infringement of our constitutional rights. in the future i suggest you research both sides of the issue at hand before making a ridiculous argument.
