Exclusive Shots From The Fall
Howdy Carsten - good luck with the game! Post-apoc RPG's are a dodgy genre... everybody that tries to make 'em seems to lose their jobs, become desperately bitter and blame the post-apoc fan-base for being "utter fucking arseholes".
You won't find any of those "utter fucking arseholes" here though... I promise
Best wishes with The Fall - hope it's a good 'un!
Love, Kreegle xoxo

Biggest problem is that everything you do is compared to FO. On one hand it's fine, because FO is a great game. On the other hand the FO community is not willing to accept anything that's different to FO. For a developer this situation is quite difficult, because if you do a RPG with an end-time scenario it seems like you have to develop something that is very similar to FO or the community will hate you.
However, we want to go our own way, to realize our own ideas and to satisfy the RPG players in general and the FO community with great gameplay.

Actually, I'd say we really don't give a shit how a PA game is, as long as it doesn't have the Fallout name slapped on it. If not for it being Fallout Tactics, it would have been a standard mediocre squad based strategy game. If not for it being Fallout:BOS, it would be another standard lame console action crapfest. On the other hand the FO community is not willing to accept anything that's different to FO

Again, not really. As long as it's a good game, no one will be too bitchy. Sure, there will be comparisons between it and Fallout, but (hopefully) not too many people will say "This game sucks because it's not exactly like FO."
And for that I'm rather grateful. However, we want to go our own way, to realize our own ideas and to satisfy the RPG players in general and the FO community with great gameplay.
fuck
People are always gonna compare post-apoc RPG's with Fallout, definitely. Especially when the title of the game is "The Fall"
But you don't necessarily need to make it "similar" to Fallout. Just take note of what worked well in the game - that's all most people would want, I think. If one of the nutbags here has a constructive idea - take a moment and consider what they're saying (Interplay obviously didn't with their PS2 Fallout game - watch that thing sink like a lead balloon). After years and years of analysing what worked and what didn't work in Fallout, quite a number of folks here have a pretty good idea of what makes a decent post-apoc game... the trick is to figure out who
Lots of love,

P.S. Leather-clad sluts in thongs and heavy-metal soundtracks are also bad ideas.

shoulder-pads on the other hand are IN!
I always thought of post-apoc games basically as westerns. An anti-hero (gun-slinger?), small desperate communitys, evil gang. Think of any western, clad everyone in leather and replace the horses with buggys. Or something.
I don't mind change in fallout, so long as it makes sense and is a good idea. Most of the time it isn't. Why use fallout anyway. If someone made a sequel to x-com that was some kind of 3rd person tactical shooter, nobody would buy it. Sequels are usually bad ideas, spoiling any ideas left from the first movie and fucking them up.

I think the problem is genre switching. When people ask "Have you played Fallout?" they're asking about the RPG FO1 or FO2, not Tactics or FOBOS. Throw in a bunch of spin-offs and it becomes like the Star Wars universe. A bunch of crappy games, some bad railed shooters, RPGs and other stuff. The thing with that though, is people don't ask "Have you played Star Wars?". They ask "Have you played KOTOR / Rebel Alliance / Jedi Knight?". Games that have (reasonably) successfully been based on the same world. The key is that they have different names that people refer to them as. Where-as with FOBOS, people will get confused with tactics (FOT:BOS) and Fallout itself, which is a bad thing.
Interestingly enough as well though, is that most of the Star Wars titles don't interfere with the main thread in the movies. It's always "some other guy" who's a bounty hunter / mercenary / hero and it's not OMG Luke SkyWalker with Darth Vader OMG. Take Fallout though, and it's the BoS who were a small group in a bunker, there are Muties who were only in California and a bunch of other references to solely localised Californian events. Star Wars is a whole universe to play with while most of Fallout is a locally based Californian thing. That makes wildly seperate games a bit hard.

If there's a good story to any game, I'm hooked. Fallout achieved the uber-cool atmosphere level, very easily. And that was with a 2D engine. You should try and create some good NPCs, ones that the player will connect with.
Don't worry about the interface. Planescape: Torment's interface kind of sucked when you first popped it into the drive, but that didn't stop it from being one of the greatest fantasy games/hack and slashes ever.

What happened to Static?
Asd for The Fall, I think theg raphics looks kind of shitty, but again, if you are gonna play zoomed out it will look good, and if the story and atmosphere are good, it's okay. You would show me a Fallout screeny today I'd be saying it looks like shit, but I still think they are perfect for the game setting.

It's post-apocalytic though - "Simulation of a complete post-catastrophe world with realistic character behavior, plausible flora and fauna as well as a stirring end-time atmosphere."ApTyp wrote:Should we really? I've always thought we were a post-apoc site... not post-nuclear. That's getting TOO anal.
