"cult" movies
"cult" movies
I'm a little confused here...
What makes movies like:
A Clockwork Orange
Pulp Fiction
Resevoir Dogs
The Matrix(?)
"CULT" Classics?
(More discussion flavor than an actual question..)

and their beloved fallout :s swell guy:
I think a cult film is just a low-budget movie that is a point of reference for a lot of films after and has a smallish elitist fan-base. Horror films always reference stuff like texas chainsaw massacre or halloween (or last house on the left if you're into kubrickianess), crime films always reference resevoir dogs and action films usually reference die hard or more recently the matrix.
didn't we have this discussion recently?

The Matrix isn't cult, lol.
Cult Cinema = under appreciated films that have a long sustained following but never break into mainstream acceptance
other great cult flicks include Taxi Driver, Donnie Darko, maybe even Blade Runner since it was completely overshadowed by ET? way to many too list
Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas is another

Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, as well as *all* of Kubrick's works, have long since broken through into the mainstream.iohkus wrote:Cult Cinema = under appreciated films that have a long sustained following but never break into mainstream acceptance
Boondock Saints started out with a small following, then it suddenly became roaringly popular and very mainstream 2 years after its release.
So what makes cult? Not being popular on your release? Or not being popular *ever*? If the second is true, most cult would really suck...
Fallout has a bigger following that you'd expect, but you migth state it started out as cult, 'cause of the low-to-average sales figures. Does this mean it's still cult, 'cause it started out as...?
PS: if you'd ask me, I'd at least set the ground-rule that anything on the Imdb top-250 is by default not cult, so that Taxi Driver, Donnie Darko, Blade Runner, Resevoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Matrix and a Clockwork Orange are all not cult.
PPS: Donnie Darko is very over-rated.

I thought for a movie to be cult, people had to actually watch it?
imdb indeed does suck, not kubrick enough. imdb is the ai that never should have been for kubricks saké. I think it's full of people who think their liek hardcore because they don't follow the mainstream, but that just means you're just following another trend by trying to be different instead of actually being? you know.

Rocky Horror Picture Show is the best example of a cult movie, because people who enjoy it actually *act* like a cult, with makeup, costumes, and 'rituals'. Withnail & I is another good cult example.
Matrix is in no way cult. Pulp Fiction, and most Kubrick stuff, isn't either. I'd say Resevoir Dogs might be, since actually not that many people seem to know about it (at least the people I hang around with).

suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

people who are cult followers of The Rocky Whore Picture Show should be rounded up and shot because that was THE worst movie i ever had to sit through in a theatre.
i sat there and thought that it would get better... but it never did.

Rocky Horror Show is a brilliant movie, and is a classic example of cult. In my book a cult film doesn't have to be practically unknown, but it does need to attract obsessional fans in the multitude. The type of fan who dresses up as the characters, knows all the lines of the movie off by heart and owns the video, the dvd, the directors cut and special edition dvds etc and still goes to see it when ever it's on at the local film theatre.

Three words....Evil....Dead....Triology.Okay, the final installment is pretty much a mainstream movie, but Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are as cult a cult gets.I mean really, they had woman get bruttaly raped by a tree(I reiterate,SHE WAS RAPED BY A TREE)in the first one, and the second one....a little nicer, but I belive it got an x rating when it was released, now it's unrated on dvd.It horror with a sick sense of humor.Just listen to the comentary on the dvds.Tons of blood, granted the color can vary, and tons of fun.Not really horror in the sense of scaring you, more horror in the sense of blood and gore.Classics, both of them.Plus, they were directed by Sam Raimi,of Zena,Hercules, and Spider-man fame. And they star the greatest b movie star of all time,Bruce Campbell. These will never be watched by a family of four with a big bowl of popcorn, because little suzy would be crying and Timmy would be vomiting.Cult is about the movies the slip through the cracks because they;re not glizty enough, or the effects don't go over well, or they don't have the a list stars. They're not going to be on a movie classic countdown, and they mostly don't win awards(I admit there are numerous exceptions)But they speak to certain people. And those people are psycho about them.Well, thats my bit.
Life is like cheap whiskey, it's mostly bad, and leaves a shitty taste in your mouth, but it's better then nothing.

Hating Rocky Horror is unimaginable, you must not have done it right. My suggestion for the virgin viewer is to go in with more experienced friends & the theatre is a must. Too messy for home. Helps to have a nice buzz of some sort going as well.

Heh we have this reality TV show over here called the Salon, basically it's just a bunch of hidden cameras watching daily life in a hairdressing salon. The staff and customers know about the cameras (which to me defeats the point to the show) but anyway back on topic, there was a customer last week who came in to get his legs waxed. That's right it was a bloke, he was going to see the Rocky Horror show for the first time and wanted to go in costume, basque stockings suspenders etc, so he got his legs waxed especially. Now that is Cult!
