hm yeah, i'll get a shitty acoustic first to learn and when i can play "people are strange" perfectly or atleast coherently, then i'll get a decent electric with small amp

i'm not into distortion overkill like most punk, "metal" music out there now, i want to like learn all 6 strings and not just 2

i probably don't even need a guitar case since i'll just be using my shitty acoustic for learning and practice, wewt

boywoos wrote:The problem with starting on an electric [which I had] is that it is far too easy to simply distort the guitar and just play really shitty punk-esque music. If you do start on the electric make sure that you always use a clean setting on your amp which will greatly hone your skills as you'll hear the mistakes distortion disguises. The other great advantage with playing clean or through an acoustic is the skill you'll gain with your playing hand. With distortion is is mainly sucessive downstrokes with the occasional palm muting. However with an acoustic you will discover that the most subtle picking and strumming techniques will add many dimensions to your playing.
I think that might be my problem, I've always been playing on an Electric, and without the distortion my playing does sound shitty, that's why I say I suck. I do sometimes play it as an acoustic in my room, when it's quiet. I donno I'm not all about playing guitar so I never really focused on getting good.

Don't worry 'bout it SuperH. I've only been playing the guitar since I was eighteen which is about three years now. I was awful until about a year ago. Then I started jamming with others which is quite possibly the best thing you can do as you learn loads of new stuff and you get tighter on the instrument so you don't look like such a wanker. I was pretty fortunate because I kinda knew some guy who is session musician standard and he showed me a lot of new stuff.

BTW when you first start playing clean, it will sound shit; even I still do but what you will notice is an improvement with your distorted playing.

Well its just as with almost anything, when you first start out you sound/look/play like a retard in a wheel chair (no offense to any retards in wheel chairs out there) but it takes practice to get good.

Yah. I've been in two bands now, I really, really, really really sucked the first time around. This one I'm a lot better in, but I've still got problems keeping up sometimes. You're right though, playing with others makes all the difference as far as improvement goes.

I don't play any instruments, though I used to play the clarinet for school and I was good or something.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Put ads in music shops or music mags, there's going to be someone who will play with you.

Or you could go to the roof of your school/work/house and play the Star Spangeled Banner, Jimi Hendrix style.

I'm a bassist, but this is a great deal on a good guitar, if you're in the market for one. Cheap, too.

EDIT: ...nevermind, no individual item linking.

It was for an Ibanez GXR 20, if you're interested in looking into it.

I'd suggest starting with Page, his electric stuff is not really as difficult as you'd think it too be. Hendrix however, thats a different story. I mean, I can play it to a degree... but to get it perfect... now thats a challenge. If you wanna play harder music I'd suggest starting with Sabbath because the riffs and stuff are pretty simple.

The best music to play though is Funk/Disco... by a long shot... start off with stuff like the early chillis. Eventually you'll move on to Chic[Pretty much anything by Nile Rodgers], Earth Wind and Fire, Average White Band, James Brown the list goes on and on. Definately start with rock though, nothing like ripping up Chuck Berry...

EDIT:

http://www.powertabs.net/ Start here, theres a small download and then a shitload of tabalature. The good thing about powertab is the metronome and the fact you can play along to it.

http://www.totalguitar.co.uk/ is also another good link with some basic lessons.

And finally... Queens of the Stone Age and Fu Manchu, I insist you learn this as well.

I just bought a $300 dollar Ibanez Hollowbody. THe acustics on it sound like a hollowbody that costs three times as much(mid range gibsons). The binding and finish are beautiful. The only thing that sucks is that the pickups sound a little thin. Will change those out when I can afford it. Got it because I have been playing more roots rock and blues.

here is a pic

I used an electric to learn. It was a $100 dollar Yamaha. I have had no problems with it and sounds pretty nice. The thing is that you can learn on an acustic or an electric. It just depends on what type of music you will be playing.

only $300. Plays nicley too. I mean it is not like a $3000 dollar Gretsch or anything like that. But is nice none the less. And as I said sounds better than some of the midrange Gibsons.
