Well, you probably get to the point where you know your guitar enough to know what frets make what sounds. Then you just go from there.

Scales and crappy shit like that is good for building muscles in the hands which allow you to fret more accurately and faster...right?

Scales are for soloing too. It'd be hard as hell to memorize a solo, it's way easier and you can do more if you just know a scale in which you can play any note and sound good for a song.

Scales help alot for blues and rockabilly. They also help for improvosation and guitar solos.

Yeah, I'm not too keen on doing repeating chords for 3/4 of a song. That just sucks.

That looks like a good thing to buy if you want to learn to play. It comes with some nice stuff, and its cheap for what youre getting.

It is a pretty nice price for what you're getting, but I really can't stress enough about not using tabs for actually learning guitar. Tabs are shortcuts for learning individual songs, if you can't already read music notation, don't screw yourself over by skipping it altogether.

It's simple to pick up, and once you know your scales, you can read and play almost anything.

Tab is incredibly easy to learn, do them both. Tells you the finger and the string, as long as you know the rythym you're set. Scales are good for strength and sounding good, and notes are for playing music you don't know or writing down music you made so you won't forget.

I'd say scales and notes over tabs.

Tabs are just picture representations of where you should put your fingers. No learning involved.

Ok, I can now play the C major scale moderately fast. I have it memorized (Yay!).

Should I memorize...all the notes?

You should memorize the notes, yes, I suggest you learn the scales and recite the notes you play like CDEFGABC and then back down. TAB helps if you can't read music, like most musicians. It also helps you learn the notes as well, like if you have the notes and then you have TAB underneath, that's how I learned my scales.
