The 100 Best Songs EVER!
The 100 Best Songs EVER!
This might be a foolish enterprise, but screw it. Here's the deal: I want to create a list of what we as a whole think are the best 100 songs ever recorded, from say, 1920 till present. This doesn't have to be one of those lists that are exhaustive and cover every decade - this is simply a bunch of songs that are fantastic, well-written, and nearly perfect. The best of the best, people.
So. Post some songs that you think fill the above criteria, and after we reach 100 (or maybe more), we can vote on which songs should be removed (if any). Or whatever. We'll see how it goes.

I'm a fan of many songs that don't go in people's top 100's, so I'll be quiet.
Also, this enterprise is foolish

this enterprise may be foolish but thats only because if your taste in movies corresponds with your taste in music, you have absolutely no taste in music.

But... GG Allen?
He was a giant vaccuum of non-talent. Not only did he suck, he re-wrote the laws of suck.
I mean, opinions are opinions, but man, GG Allen sucked.

If you want to ever make a serious compilation of the 100 most notable songs ever created by mankind you're going to have to vary it, from all genres, from all times in history, and from all countries, sort of like the baraka of music, or like the thing on the voyager satellite that has a sample of every culture etc...
otherwise you're just going to get personal prefrence... like always

Only a hundred? You bastard. Here's my picks in the order I come across them in my MP3 collection. One per artist to avoid clutter and stuff.
The Doors - Roadhouse Blues <-- This, Riders on the Storm or LA Woman is quite possibly the single greatest song ever. So much goodness from Morisson & Co.
AC/DC - Back in Black
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Queen - Tie Your Mother Down <-- I'd go for Bohemian, but Kharn covered that one and I love Tie Your Mother Down.
54-40 - Ocean Pearl
America - A Horse With No Name
Babe Ruth - The Mexican <-- A dismaying amount of people have never heard of this one, but it's got masterful guitar playing in it.
The Beatles - Day in the Life
Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth
CCR - Bad Moon Rising <-- Utter fucking goodness
David Bowie - Suffragette City
Deep Purple - Highway Star
Don McLean - The Day the Music Died
Doobie Brothers - Deep Black Water
The Eagles - Hotel California
Edgar Winters Group - Frankenstein
ELP - Karnevil 9 <-- Fanfare for the Common Man is also genius
Eric Clapton - Cocaine
Foreigner - Jukebox Hero
Golden Earring - Radar Love <-- THE ultimate driving song
Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain
Guns & Roses - Welcome to the Jungle
Headstones - Tweeter and the Monkey Man
Iron Maiden - Run for the Hills
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Krokus (Maybe Sweet?) - Barroom Blitz
Led Zepplin (of course) - Immigrant Song <-- Most would say Stairway, but I like Immigrant Song better
Manford Mann - Blinded by the Light
Moody Blues - I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock n' Roll Band)
Nancy Sinatra - These Boots are Made for Walking
Neil Young - Ohio
The Police - Synchronicity II
The Pretenders - Middle of the Road
Steve Miller Band - Take the Money and Run
Supertramp - Bloody Well Right
The Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime
The Band - Chest Fever <-- My favourite argument as to why organs should be used in rock after ELP
Uriah Heep - Easy Livin'
Yes - Roundabout
ZZ Top - La Grange
I think that'll do
