Too much Xmas and it's only Dec. 4th

Post by requiem_for_a_starfury »

Just switched on the telly and caught the end of a program called the christmas show. Saw a bit of it the other day with a bunch of people in a studio, decked out with xmas decorations, singing xmas carols. Thought WTF somebody's screwed up the scheduling or something, but it was on again today and according to the TV guide it's on every day up to the event itself.

Come on I know it gets early every year but this just ridiculous, it's only December 4th and I'm already sick of the sight of tinsel. I remember the days when the shops didn't start preparing for xmas until the middle of December, or the TV stations didn't start their xmas schedule until the week before, and when advent calenders where actually for the period of advent (11 days?) and not the whole of December.

I'm not a christian but xmas seemed so much better when I was a kid, a holiday to look forward to, nowadays I can't be bothered and haven't gone to the family get together for several years. This rampant commercialism just puts me right off, especially how kids think that they have some divine right to the most expensive/sought after toys etc.

The best (worst) thing is you can bet if I go down the shops on boxing day they'll be starting to stack the shelves with easter eggs, with today's preservatives (or lack of) do they even keep for that long?

Just one thing to say really, Bah Humbug. :)

I completely agree. Not to sound like some misogynistic anti-commercialism whiner (I actually heartily endorse the commerical aspect of Xmas as it gets me the ph4t l3wts), but I hate to see Christmas crap this early. I draw the line at December 15th. Cram all your Christmas specials, sales, parades and charity silliness into that period.

It's a perfect example of holiday gone commercialized. We had a whole lot of talking about this subject in the Halloween-thread, go check there what other people think about this.

Commercialization of holidays = Strongest argument against capitalism.

Of course, due to my incredibly short experience in life, I really can't remember a time when Christmas wasn't commercialized. It still pissed me off, though, even when I was five years old. "Why the fuck is there Christmas stuff in the mall when it's not even Thanksgiving yet?!" I used to say. Well, not quite -- as an incredibly deprived child, I didn't learn the magical "F-word" until the age of eight. But I digress.

Bullshit commercialization makes me wish Marx was right, and that the system would hurry the fuck up into communism.

Edit: I agree with Spazmo that commercialization is alright in the sense that it gets me lots of nice shit, but the same commercialization is leading to Christmas specials in the middle of fucking August.

You people are so uptight. So let the media have their fun. Let the ignorant masses do what they will with their phony festivity, because it doesn't affect us unless we choose to bitch about it. I find that ignoring Christmas until the week before helps me actually harbor a real "Christmas spirit" instead of the commercialized bullshit they sell you each year.

Christmas sucks. I'm not really looking forward to it this year, nor am I planning on buying anybody anything or asking for very much at all. All the nice shit that I want, I can already get? Maybe my definition of 'nice shit' differs from most of yours, but most things people buy are useless anyway. At sixteen, I've already seen & done pretty much everything I've wanted to see & do (that can be bought, anyway).

Besides, the brother has brought the gift-giving up a notch to nauseating levels, and asking me for a bunch of dumb shit since early last month, and consequently I'm rather pissed at him.

Obviously, if you don't like material goods, you must be impotent or something.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

With regards to the Christmas talk, you guys are some sad, angst ridden people. Be with loved ones, hang decorations, BUY presents, whatever...just do what YOU feel like doing to celebrate the holiday instead of showing everyone how 'against the grain' you are with regards to the mainstream. Sometimes I think you guys take yourselves WAY too seriously.

Oh, and Kashluk, Christmas has been about 'commericalization' for a LONG time, so its not like you're saying anything real deep or thought provoking, or is this just an epiphany you recently had.

All in jest folks...

Merry Christmas :D

I'm not jazzed up about Christmas simply because I'm not, EvoG. I once enjoyed Christmas, but not much anymore. A lot of this is angsty bullshit, but what I'm trying to say is that I don't enjoy Christmas, not that everybody who likes it needs to die. If your idea of Christmas fun involves those things, then go ahead and do them, but I think I'll make my own decisions when it's necessary rather than go mainstream all the time, you fucking asshole.

hahahaha

yea anyway

I always look forward to christmas. It might be a bit early this year, but december always seems to go pretty quick. I don't bother going to town as there's not much there that's intresting, so I wouldn't know if they've put up a santas grotto or anything yet.

It might seem a bit cheesey from when I remember it, instead of father christmas and snowy jingle-bell stuff it's just some coca-cola avatar and it always fucking rains. But yea, I look forward to christmas. I get some stuff that I've had my eye on all year, I like winter and everyone at least aknowledges it's christmas, un-like every other holiday.

It is a bit phony, like people putting those menorah thingys in there windows or all the specials (bad tv specials, songs, food). But I like christmas, probably the highlight of the year.

God bless us, every one! except Jawz II

Thats the best you got? Resort to getting defensive and name calling rather than saying anything constructive? Way to go chief. Some ego you got there, as if I wasn't talking to ANYONE else but you. ;)

I never said you couldn't make you're own decisions slick, I said ( if you actually read my post ) that you do whats RIGHT FOR YOU during Christmas, be it spending time with family, decorations, presents, or quietly doing nothing, whatever.

Well, now, I thought mysogynistic meant general pissy kind of person. Consqeuently, shit. Replace it with the opposite of philanthropic then.

And my impotence has nothing to do with Christmas.

I find people who talk about "ignorant masses" are usually the most ignorant of all, and snobby, too.
atoga wrote:At sixteen, I've already seen & done pretty much everything I've wanted to see & do (that can be bought, anyway).
That's a lie. You have to be eighteen before you can know everything and have done everything.

That's not the point, Steve-o. The point is that Christmas has gotten bloated and too ginormous. I'm not talking about commericalisation. I'm talking about all the fanfare and decorations and assorted Christmas white noise that pervades the western world as early as mid-November. I think there's a place and time for Xmas cheer, but it's not a full 1/12 of the year. I think it'd be more appropriate to start the Xmas huzzah on the fifteenth of December.

Haha, yea no shit...sixteen huh? K

Hilarious. Good thing that I was never THAT naive in my teens, thinking the world ends right there. Shit, seeing as thats such a common, angsty theme for 'teenagers', its amazing ANYONE in the history of Earth survived to adulthood to see the real world.

No I know, I just love Christmas, so I guess it can't come early enough for me. Considering how boring and miserable Jan - March is ( mainly because of the cold ass weather ), the holidays need to ramp up for me so I can carry some of that momentum into those dreary months.

I don't know...really I guess I'm saying 'who cares' it can be positive it you make it positive and it will be negative if you insist on making it negative.

Merry Christmas. :D
