Anyone Teaching English Abroad?

I want to do this, but don't know where to start. I figured maybe Hammer teaches abroad?

Would I need teaching experience?

I think there's some sort of certificate training out there that probably helps you get employed... but I don't see how it would matter as long as I know English.

I'm guessing there must be a big demand for these English courses in foreign countries given that it's pretty much becoming a universal language...

I mainly just want to get the hell out of my place and go to Siberia and teach some huskies English.

I've googled some and it has helped, but first hand experience would be enlightening. :arrow:

you would probably have to goto some type of remedial teachers college and pay like 10k.

i would rather be one of those bad assed driver instructors. you get a new car every 30000 km and you have assloads of insurance if some inept wanker crashes your veichle.

From what I here though, people in like Japan, South Korea and even China go nuts over westerners, specially ones who teach.

So there's the added benefit of massive orgies. But then again there's also the downside of SARS... hmmm.

I know a couple of people doing ESL in South Korea right now. Basically it gives you teaching experience rather than requiring it. But it's a big investment to do so.

Chose wisely and start leaving us alone!

Hrm... my English teacher did a bunch of teaching in Africa a few years back, and he seems harmless enough today. Doing so seems to be at least worth the experience. You'd probably have to do some boring teacher's college stuff beforehand though. It seems like a good way to get started teaching, anyway (if you're into that sort of thing).

yeah, I've applied already to one that claims $2000 monthly salary in CDN while teaching abroad which is a shit load more than what Swiss Chalets' order processing commision pay gives me

my plan is if i do get in somehow and pass any required interviews, i'll go to south korea and instigate a left wing revolution then unite south and north and become the world leedar!!11oenoneone eventually invade China.

Hmm, I'm considering going to Japan next year as an exchange student. Generally the best place to start is to ask your college's foreign students section cause they have the information for that stuff.

Talking first hand contact experience with the subject I can give you some pointers for Asia in general. ItÃƒâ€šÃ‚Â´s important what you have in mind.

-If you have excellent qualifications and experience as an English teacher, you can go anywhere you want and make an excelent salary in big cities in the more developed areas.

-If you have qualifications but little experience I would suggest that you try cities in poorer countries or places of the beaten track in richer countries and you will probably make a good living.

-If you have little to no qualifications as a teacher and no experience you better go to more remote and poorer areas, you will probably live like a king by local standards, but maybe not your present one.

And then again you may be one of those lucky bastards.

My brother's friend was studying in S-Korea & teaching English at the same time, I don't think he had any experience either... but like you said, English is in high demand over there these days. Not a bad idea

I believe they'd like to see some teaching degrees of some sort first... knowing how to speak english, I don't know, doesn't sound quite "enough".

I don't really mind much about pay as long as i'm fed and warm, I just want to get out and go somewhere else really,

if it's not what I want I can always hop a plane and scurry back to this hell hole.

Mostly with indiference.

The "native" chinese community and the foreign communities in general dont mix much. Of course there are always some westerners or other asians going native and plenty of chinese who work and like the contact with foreigners but essentially the foreigners dont mix much with chinese.

2 good reasons, culture and education. Foreigners are generally educated and cosmopolitan people who mix well with the more educated local elites but not with commoners. It may sound snob but it is true. Culturally the differences are abismal. But there is no conflict and people go along pretty well.

That's a load of crap.

Most people (of any nation) dislike foreigners for a variety of reasons and people these days are getting real sick of the whole "foreigners are cool! lets shower them with flowers and respect because they are rich and can travel!" bullshit because let's face it, we live in a globalised world. This isn't the 60s-70s anymore when Americans or English could just visit any country and be treated like kings while poor people starve on the streets (e.g. Phillipines, Vietnam, Burma)

You might meet some stupid young asian girls who are enamored in the presence of a tall white man with a long white dick but I ask you seriously: would that be fulfilling? If you're in it for all the wrong reasons you shouldn't get into it at all because you won't have much to reflect upon when people ask you why you teach or if you ever ask yourself that question.

As for SARS? WTF.

P.S. Teaching is a fool's errand.

Being able to speak english fluently is probably enough.
My mom taught english there for a while, while my dad was working for the army. She can speak Korean, though, but there was an American guy who moved there and taught English. I don't think he spoke any Korean or had any teaching experience. He couldn't find a job here in the states, so he went to teach English in Korea.

So, a person who speaks English as his mother tongue but get's F- from every English exam, is qualified to teach the language?

Speaking and teaching are two different worlds. One may know how to make the best pies in the world, but can't share the recipe.

I dunno, it looks like there's the demand.
You should have heard some of the english teachers I spoke with, they can't even speak english.
They probably aren't qualified, but they might manage to get a job. Probably a low paying one, though.
