3d fighting games vs 2d fighting games
So do you prefer 3d fighting games like soul caliber, tekken, etc., or 2d fighting games like street fighter, mortal kombat, killer instinct, or marvel vs. capcom?
Personally, I think that 2d fighting games are better since they require more skill. For instance, if you try to mash in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, you will get destroyed real fast. Though games like Dead or Alive 3 are quite nice to look at...

Really, it isn't a matter of one type of viewpoint or another, it depends on what type of game you desire. For games that require super duper moves like fireballs and crap, 2-D games are probably better. If you want a more realistic fighter 3-D is the way to go.
As for stradegy and skill; saying that one is better then the other is only being biased because its more of a game by game type of deal. Anyone can buttonmash in Tekken with Eddie as they can in other games so just stating that one is naturally more strategic is kinda like saying "Blondes are better then brunnettes".
Both types have produced very good games. For 2-D I highly suggest Guilty Gear X-2, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, or The Last Blade. All three are very good.
For 3-D, I like Virtua Fighter Evolution, Dead or Alive, and Kengo (Replacement to Bushido Blade).
All the titles take stradegy. And more so, these stradegies differ depending on how you fight, who you're using, and your opponent. Now that thats settled. Go argue over something else.

hmmm... the arcade fighter game Last Blade 2 is a 2D, and there were no characters which you could mash-button play... nor were there any combos you could misuse.
An example of a 3D game, Mortal Combat 4, where Raiden had that flying-lightning move, that instantly stunned an opponent... repeat that move throughout the entire game to complete it...
Also, the white-faced techno evil dude, had the tele-stomp which was a pretty vile move as well...
In that case, 2D over 3D.
I have to admit though, that Soul Caliber is a pretty wicked game, in characters, moves and graphics. I've only tried it three times, so I don't know any mis-uses.
As for Tekken, I've only tried TAG-Tournament, which utterly sucked... too many characters that were way alike, and the gameplay is über-slow...

No you don't. MvC2 is one of the most button-masher friendly games around. Pick the right characters (CABLE WOLVERINE) and you can button mash all you like. Virtua Fighter 4's one of the few games I can think of where button mashing is completely futile. That being said, saying 2d or 3d better than the other is asinine; they both have their strengths and weaknesses, and debating between the two is moot k thnx.Franz_Schubert wrote:Good points Walt. However, mashing in MvC2 is hopeless. You have to know the moves and know the combos, and you have to know when to use them.

id rather play 2d games because the characters were always better.
like mortal kombats characters were awesome.
all these 3d fighting games are bullshit. shitty characters with shitty moves and shitty weapons. unless you want something pretty to look at 2d are better.
and whoever said 3d = more realism is correct to a sense but if you have ever played them, realism isnt an issue. you can only punch a guy in the face so many times or kick them in the face or stab them with something pointy. id rather shoot fireballs than have a bunch of characters attempting to be real but failing miserably.

Thanks captain genius, I'll take notes from you if I ever get into a fight. I ment more of that you can see more realistic interpretations of the martial arts and in some cases, reinact fights very realistically such as in Bushido blade. As for the characters "failing" miserably. I think that'de be a matter of conjecture, and since you most likely know nothing about the topic, well then, lets leave it at that.Mandalorian FaLLouT GoD wrote: and whoever said 3d = more realism is correct to a sense but if you have ever played them, realism isnt an issue. you can only punch a guy in the face so many times or kick them in the face or stab them with something pointy. id rather shoot fireballs than have a bunch of characters attempting to be real but failing miserably.

ooo i love you too. ive never played Bushido Blade because i dont play every fighting game to come out of japan for a console. shit i dont even own new consoles because i cant find a reason anyone would pay 400 for a box that plays garbage games and will go out of style in a couple years.Wolfman Walt wrote:Thanks captain genius, I'll take notes from you if I ever get into a fight. ive played soul caliber, soul caliber 2, tekken, the new mortal kombat and thats all i can think of. its not that i dont play modern games, its that i dont see a purpose to buying a system they will stop making games for in a year for 200 bucks. all the game cubes i can find are for 200 and that is easily the lowest priced.
not that i can see why anyone would but a game cube. its got a whole 2 games that are worth playing?
