i liked being able to salvage and scavenge after battles, a t-55 here and there go a long way with me, also the repair shop and equipment stores were a good touch, upgrading armour, different ammo for different tasks, lots of guns and assorted weapons, the helicopters are great too, best i've seen and used in any game.
I can see why you hated it though, but i've been comparing this to FO:Tactics, and this (yeah i know FO:T was crap, but i liked it) beats the shit out of Tactics with or without turn based mode

I loved this game to death when it came out. Played it none stop on a computer with bugger all RAM, so had to reboot half way through every mission to avoid slow down.
As for shitting on Fo:T, I agree. It's alot cooler vechile combat, but the soldier vs soldier combat is lacking, unless you're sniping or at the beginning of the game.

i've just been looking through the readme for SOA, apparently theres a patch out for Turn based mode if anyone that has this game is interested.
the vehicle combat is great, but the guerrila tactics that can be used with soldiers versus vehicles is also great imo, soldier versus soldier... you could be onto something there, if it was turn based and more of an rpg like fallout, it'd be up there with the classics, although i still do think its a classic game especially for a post apoc genre game.
