Why parents are *NOT* allowed to buy a f*cking computer!

I ended up having to take a CS105 entry-level computer class this semester. It's considered the equivalent of a business class that I need to have which was full, but because only this class is the equivalent, I couldn't get one of my other computer classes counted as a credit for this class. Anyway, this was the first semester that the Professor taught this class, although he teaches other classes. All of his class presentations basically consisted of him reading PowerPoint slides that came on a CD with the book. But that's not the worst thing about the class.

During the semester, he managed to display a very poor, working knowledge of Windows and a weak grasp of current technology. In the first or second week of the class, it took him 12 minutes -- yeah, I timed it -- to figure out how to view the contents of the CD to start the slides, even though Windows XP pops up with that little "What do you want to do with this CD" window. The next class period he had the same problem, but this time we told him what to click in order to start the slideshow. Speaking of which, he would frequently come across a slide and say something along the lines of "Oh, I don't really know anything about that" or "I haven't heard of this before." Often, it was something as basic as webcams.

From those rare occasions that I was actually paying attention (Solitaire on the PDA, reading a book, or just plain sleeping were all common diversions for me) I was able to figure out that this guy worked almost exclusively on Linux, which I had suspected. I never heard him say much about it, but my guess is that he probably tended to teach 300 or 400 level courses about specific languages. It's easy to imagine him teaching a few obscure languages that hardly anyone actually knows, which are still in use because of legacy systems, but I've had other horrible professors teaching other mainstream courses so I suspect that's mainly wishful thinking.

Whatever his deal was, this guy wasn't suited for the class. I've heard that he won't be teaching it next semester; I hope they can replace him with somebody who can at least handle the basics of an operating system designed to be user friendly!

Wasn't there some test you could have taken which would let you skip the entry level computer course all together? That's what my friend did.

Problem fixed, I found an offer on two top-notch machines for $150 more. P4 2.8, 512DDR(dunno which...), 160GB HD Nvidia Geforce 5200, WinXP-pro(Finally!) and a bunch of accessories...

Now people are asking themselves; "For office work?" and my answer is; shit no!
For me to grab the insides and replace it!

I got a couple of low P4's and a GeForce 2MX which I could replace them with. Besides, better than the Celeron, and I can guarantee the old man that the comps are going to work.

As for handling a computer physically and software-wise he's not an idiot, he knows well how to handle equipment and he's been using programs since the early 80's... so getting a laptop wouldn't be a bad choice at all. *shrugs* Ah well, problems solved, I get paid, and a bunch of new hardware on top of it.

~The End~

Sounds remarkably like my stats teacher. In the fact he wasn't any good at it. He'd photocopy pages out of the book, rock up to the class 15min late EVERY time, and pointed at graphs while mumbling. makes you wonder why there's only 1/3 of the class ever passes every year.....

teachers are all like that now. half the teachers know nothing about most of the course and specialize in certain parts.

my physics teacher in college knows tons a theoretical physics, but hes teaching in an automotive engineering/design program and he has no clue how an engine works.
shit he makes questions about brakes up and has no clue how brakes work.

anyways, who cares, a comp class is for playing games in, not learning. all they ever teach you is typing and basic windows bullshit that an 8 year old ADHD kid could do.[/quote]

I had a fun weekend with my computer while trying to install Win2K pro. Why? Well, I went to this Lan-party and Win98 doesn't, surprise surprise, work well in the network so I had to upgrade.

Well because of some odd thing, I wasn't able to install it. I tried doing it through Windows, through booting, through everywhere... No luck, it always crashed. So, then a bud of mine suggested that there was a component that Win2K didn't like. So, I tore off everything I had connected to my PCI. No luck. Then we tried installing Win XP, it crashed just the same. Back to win2k pro again... Then we dropped off the DVD-player and only left CD-RW on. No luck, then we took another hard-drive off, no luck. We tried it the other way around, no luck. I formatted 8 GB C: with win98, no luck - even (accidently) formatted my 80 GB storage hard drive, no luck there either.

We struggled with it for 5 hours, from 5 PM to 10 PM, and then someone said: "Maybe it's the graphics accelerator?" We were like, how? But after tried everything, we decided to give it a try. We plugged off my GeForce 4 Ti4200 and borrowed a friend's GeForce 2 MX. Wonders, wonders - it installed Win2K correctly.

So what did I have after that?

- A system where no programs were able to run, had to reinstall everything.

- A system, with 80 Gbs of empty space (luckily I got tons of stuff later on from the Lan-happening, hehe)

- A system, which lost all my custom settings and optimazing for the Windows I had done, have to set everything up again.

- A system, which lost all my personal archives, including thousands of e-mail messages and official documents.

Lucky me.

Yeah, but Windows 2000 is a much nicer operating system than Windows 98, in my opinion.

I've noticed that it is, in fact, more stable when there are tons of programs running. And crashed programs can be shut down without killing the OS. It's fine, win98 usually meant running one program at a time and if it crashed - reboot.

And of course it works very well in the network. And *looks* exactly the same as win98.

Since I upgraded to 2000, from ME no less, I generally don't turn my computer off anymore. It'll run for weaks at a time without so much as a restart and it's still very stable.

I guess being based on an operating system created for professional market has it's advantages.

Seriously though, the point is, why oh *why* do parents think they have any ability of buying or understanding anything more complicated than a toaster?

Maybe because they think that because they are your elders, they know more than you, and want to impress you with their "Almighty" knowledge. *Chuckle*

At home, I got my comp, my step-dad his and bro has his own, all 3 plugged onto a network. Luckily, they don't know shit about networking AND I know my step-dad's password to the network administration tool, so I own them :D
