Final Fantasy VIII's ending was pretty decent IMO. "Bittersweet" at start, but then it turned out to be all happy and stuff.

And yeah, as mentioned before, Mafia had a surprising ending. I really digged it. Especially the way they changed the whole era from the point where Tommy Angelo betrayed de la famiglia (30's) to the point when Salvatore's men finally caught him and shared some "sawn-off justice" (60's). It was great and totally kicked me in the nuts, because I thought "oh yeah, this is another one of those boring happy-hippy endings, boo-hoo..."

Revolutionarily shitty. It had a brilliant start (Midgar) and quickly went downhill. Though I will admit it's largely responsible for the popularity of RPGs today and it was pretty epic for its time.

Good endings (That I don't think have been pointed out): The orc campaign in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

Jak and Daxter (good game all around)

Giants: Citizen Kabuto (I'm never going to get a fucking sequel)

Radiant Silvergun.

Fallout 1 ending: The ending to Fallout 1 was brilliant as game endings go. It was just so fitting. Plus, the devs knew when to stop (no "oh wait, just one last fetching quest so the vault can be saved...") It was beautiful.

Fallout 2 ending: On the other hand, the Fallout 2 ending was unadulterated shit. The fight with Horrigan made no sense, and while it wasn't bad as fights go, it seemed badly tacked on. Le lame.

Planescape Torment ending: The last part of PST was rushed, but the ending was still really satisfying. The whole story was very nicely wrapped up in the last 30 minutes or so of the game, and the ending movie was quite cool as well.

I played the first ones, so don't bother telling me I'm not an old school and can't understand.

In my mind, FF online is the worst one, I haven't played the IX and X yet tho.
i disliked FF8 because of those fucking annoying cut scenes every goddamn time you used a card or whatever. i mean i got half way through the game then threw it into a wall because i was tired of seeing the EXACT same movies over and over and over and over. plus the story sucked.

Hitman 2 had a good ending just to add to the list.

The whole FF franchise is one lame-assed party of lame. Yep, it sure is lame. Anyway, disregard it.

Hitman 2 had a goodish ending, though the whole 'forgive me father I have sinned' shit was a bit lame. Looks like he's back to kicking ass in 'Contracts' though. I think the hitman series seems pretty under-rated though.

The mgs2 ending had good ideas but, like the first one the actual ending after you stop playing sucked again. Being force-fed philosophical bullshit doesn't mean your game/movie is smart.

Duke nukem 3d had a good ending.

I liked the ending for Unreal. You could say it was an anti-climax, but I thought it was a fitting end. Plus I was glad when the game finally finished.

The call of duty ending was pretty lame. There should have been another map or a big fight, instead I get to just run through 3 buildings and a courtyard. The bits before was good though. It'd probably be my favourite game if it was at least twice as long. When did it become acceptable to make games last for 20 levels with around 10 hours of gameplay?

Are we talking about the end (boss) level or the actual end movie/credits etc.

Fallout's ending was different, instead of the hero's welcome you were expecting you get the bum's rush, though I suppose they couldn't get away with doing that twice for FO2.

They wrapped the story up nicely in Planescape Torment but by the time you reach the end you have a real badass character whose skills you don't really get to use much. Wouldn't it of been great that after you see the end movie and your character goes off to fight, that they had an open free for all level where the enemies were constantly respawning and you can fight try out all those high level spells until you got bored?

FFX has the worst ending EVER! The last boss looks like a tick. And then that summoner botch makes some speech about living in piece. It is all very VERY gay. FFX is the worst FF game there is, then FF8, then FF9.

I think I liked the ending of Secret of Mana though I can't even remember it now... something about this kid's mother being a tree or something.

Creepy thing: I could not stop playing FF IV for 3 straight days.

The Neo-Dark-Age Ending of Deus Ex sucked Interplay ass. Helios and Illuminati endings weren't exactly perfect either but are a hell of alot better.

Another bad ending was the Boss Fight with the Transcendent One. True, The Nameless One could have used the Blade Of The Immortal but the actual fight could have been so much more epic-like.

Fallout II- Do I have to explain?

Well, how much "epic" can you expect when a man fights his mortality? "Ach, my former self, now prepare to face my 5000-headed orc army! And 40 000 arch mages! And million green goblins! And, and, and..." But seriously, I never bothered to kill the boss, I thought the way to overcome him through dialogue was a lot sexier.

After finishing Doom, I have to say it's got a decent ending. Reading all that text, then having the screen pan across to a bunny impaled on a stick is rather cool.

You always have to defeat the boss via non-violence, it's so freaking cool but I wanted to end the game two different ways.

I would have expected my mortality to own him halfway through the fight. The Nameless One could have been crippled. I don't know. It's a excellent game, regardless.
