Leaked S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Alpha

Post by Mad Max RW »

<strong>[Game -> Update]</strong>

<html><body><P>There have been some rumors the past couple days that an early build of <A HREF=http://www.stalker-game.com/ target=_blank>S.T.A.L.K.E.R.</A> made its way to the public. I don’t know the circumstance of how it was leaked or where exactly to get it (not like I’d post links here anyway). So far there hasn’t been an official response from GSC Game World. But I can tell you from first hand experience that an obviously very early tech demo, most likely used for screenshots, is definitely floating around the internet.</P><P>All I’m asking is for people to not download the demo and spoil any surprises for themselves. But you’re going to do what you want to do, just show some respect and don’t advertise where to get it. </P></body></html>

Goody goody, sound familiar? HL2 has been pushed back beyond the horizon for this very same reason. I don't think people realize putting out before the developers are prepared only slows down the process.

It isn't all that similar to HL2. Valve lost a huge chunk of the game along with the source code days before they're September 30 release date. This is an ancient demo made for taking screenshots. Nothing more. I can easily recreate some of those old shots where you see the dude attacked by a swarm of rats. Everything is placed like a movie set.

i downloaded no surprises at all. Just random levels with nothing in them and a few creatures here and there... That's it really.

I never understood that whole deal with HL2. So hackers took the source code from Valve... now Valve has no game and has to write it all again or what?

Why don't they release it anyway?

nah, they stole a copy of the source-code or something, and now Valve has to rewrite parts of it to prevent cheating and stuff or something?

Or maybe HL2 wasn't fucking well going to be ready for release on Sept. 30th and they needed some excuse to delay the game? I'm not saying they staged the source theft or anything, but they did capitalize upon it to delay the game.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

With HL2, the problem was that when the source code was taken, since the game will also be released on Steam, the Steam code for HL2 was taken. And since you can pay for HL2 on-line with CREDIT CARDS someone with the source code could find holes in the system and steal credit card numbers. So Valve has to completely restructure HL2's security system before it can be released.

I was under the impression that the build was compiled from bits of source code taken, my mistake.

Same with the Doom Alpha. I don't believe Id had anything rather new at that year's E3.

What they did is they the exploited an...exploit in, yep, you guessed it, MICROSOFT'S e-mail system and leached little bits of all the stuff going across the e-mail system at Valve and assembled the source code that way.

Clever, but fucking ANNOYING for those who wanted it in 2003.

I tend to prefer http://www.packetnews.com/search.php?kw=stalker myself.

As for Half life 2, they didn't leech it out of the e-mail system in small bits. That's undoable, dude, and also fucking ridiculous.

Idiot.

What they did was steal the passwords (all accessible via the port leaks in Outlook) to the Storage Server containing the source code as well as a build of the game and logged in via a connection with a high bandwidth pipeline and leeched it out of the server in a under an hour (or couple of hours). Remember, Valve's servers are running on a high bandwidth pipeline too, so copying the files out wasn't much slower than it would be to transfer files over a LAN.

For the record, the Stalker build was compiled May 19 2002. That's old as hell.

Depends. It has the same impact as 2 year old screenshots or concept art. If that kinda stuff blows you away you might enjoy it.
