Oh my craps

Post by Cipher »

I think I am finally going to come out of my stone age barrier and get cable access at home

I have only one option and that would be Insight. The main question I have is can I buy any cable modem to use with their service? I can buy a $60 one through Insight, I'm not sure what kind it is. I recently saw a used cable modem on Ebay for $25 including shipping but I wonder what benifits or disadvantages there are between getting one through Insight compared to anyone I can find.

So mainly are there certain fetures I need to look for for best performance? The Ebay one was 10/100 capable and had ethernet and USB ports on it.

It's better to call up the cable company and have them do it rather than dicking around with ebay.

And it's better to get DSL instead of a cable, too.
Don't know about the modems though, I just bought a 4-way Hub that has a built-in ADSL-modem, so I got internet for all three of computers + a LAN-network.

Oh, and Cipher... if you post a question at 3:30 in the morning, don't expect to be bombarded with answers 6 hours later.

Saint uses Insight, so I think it's fine. But I think you should have a tech guy set it up for you instead of getting a modem off ebay as you might get one for free by signing up.

Hmmm. I think the time thing is screwed up, I posted that much earlier my time.

Yeah, I think I will just get one through insight and see if they can offer me a good deal.

I dunno. Where I live, and I guess quality of service varies from area to area, my cousin has DSL and I have cable. He complains bitterly about his ISP whereas he keeps resolving to switch to cable when he comes here and accesses the internet from my place.

Go figure. Personally I'm glad I've got cable. It's served me pretty well.

Thats one of the main problems with DSL, you have to be close to the provider to get faster speeds.

I'm still on the ol' dial-up. It does the job, I suppose.

Just not very fast.

One of the main reasons is I am working a part time business from home now that requires fast access. Now I have a totaly legitimate reason to get cable so that helps.

Once things pick up with my side business it will be smooth sailing, access upgrades, new PC etc. etc. If anyone is interested is interested in a highly profitable business opportunity they want to get involved with then email me at mpj13@hotmail.com

I've got cable...Works like a top all the time. My buddy about 10 miles from me has DSL...He gets greater speeds, but only at around 4AM...

Cable vs. DSL - Depends on when you sleep.

Actually, it depends where you live. If you live really close to the DSL signal, you will get incredible speeds. However, if you live on the outskirts of the radius, you'd be better off with cable.

This topic is so last year. Damn grave diggers :P

I'm all for cable personally. I'm still using dial-up myself (moving at a whopping 4600 bps a few min ago.)

It's not grave digging if the original post was done 11 days ago and has been actively posted in during that period. Nyah!

The one thing I really like about having a cable modem is downloading porn. Before September that would have said "MP3's" but you know..I hate the big corporations that want to sue everyone...So I'm sticking with porn..It's fun to watch AND to listen to. Thank you, Cable Modem.

Yeah, so much better than Iron Maiden!

You know how US Abrams crews rig up CD players to their radios so that they can listen to rock while they blow shit up? Soon it'll be porn.

I worked for an internet company for a while, and if anything goes wrong with that modem youre fucked, if you get it through them, theyll support it and replace it when it breaks.
