Post by Mandalorian FaLLouT GoD »

i just wanted to get some people to post some good 50-70s sci-fi or post apoc books. i know its been done but i dont feel like digging for 50 pages.

anyways give me some books so i can expand my horizons.

im reading The Long Tommorow by Leigh Brackett right now and i found a copy of A Canticle for Lebowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. in a book story for a dollar.

i also grabbed Ringworld by Larry Niven too.

old book stores pwnizzle.

Ringworld was my favourite book before I read Dune. Still is great, Larry Niven is a real class author all around, if you like Ringworld read the rest of the series, especially the second one. If I remember correctly, he's working on yet another, but I haven't heard much about it.

I'm not sure when it was written, 70's or 80's, but "Wolf and Iron" by Gordon R. Dickson is post apoc. I read it once as a kid and I loved it, and I finally tracked it down and bought it for myself, and I'm reading it again. It's slow going, but it's showing promise, it's pretty much just been about surviving so far, hasn't gotten to the real action yet.

One author I'm wondering about is Carlton Mellick III, in referance to the movies Tetsuo the Iron Man, Eraserhead and Begotten on Amazon.com, he comes up a ton... so I bought one of his books, Sunset With a Beard, but I haven't gotten it yet. Anyone read any of his stuff?

dunno much of teh older sci-fi or post apocish stuff from the 70's but i do know the title of a great sci-fi book, dunno the author but its called White Wing... odd tale where the earth has been destroyed in a war and a few thousand humans survived by fleeing and seeking asylum on an earthlike planet, and get treated like shit by the alien guys, anyway the story is about hardship, vengeance and redemption... Always good storylines!! heheh

A Clockwork Orange could possibly fit under sci-fi. Possibly.

Anything--and I mean anything by Philip K. Dick is both sci-fi and post apoc.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

stfu? You have to admit, it gets pretty damn *heavy* by the fourth book! I got half way through it and said "I'm done with Dune".

If you want some good Sci-Fi, try Philip Jose Farmer. He wrote Dayworld (I highly recommend it) among other things. Not post-apoc, but still quality sci-fi. His characters are never the greatest, but his imagination is first-class, thus he comes up with quite memorable stories/plot twists.

You should try to finish it, it's long and boring but still good. I've read the entire series, except the newest of the prequels because i've got like 9 other books to read, and it's all good stuff.

Earth Abides..Not from the 70's, but it's damn good, none-the-less. And I'm not just mentioning it because it's "inspiration" for post-apoc games, because I read this when I was in Middle School (about 6 years before FO came out, and I'd never heard of Wasteland).

That's what I'm talking about the new prequels. He's in the process of finishing it... he made one set of prequels about what happened right before Dune, then the one in progress (2/3 out) is about the Butlerian Jihad, man vs. the machines and stuff, and then they're doing a third trilogy (i'd assume it's going to be another trilogy) finishing up from where the last original one left off, since it was a crazy cliffhanger. They're definately not as good as the originals, but, meh, they're still interesting, since they're based on Herbert's notes, so at least there's some of his real ideas in there.

i just finished The Machine Crusade by Brian Herbert. It's definitly better then the Houses trilogy but still not the level of his fathers books.

for some good science fiction check out the Foundation series by Asimov. 2001 A Space Odyssey by Clarke is worth reading, much better then the movie anyway, as well as the sequels. Otherland series by Williams are good to. and anything Philip K. Dick you can get your hands on ofcourse.
