That guy was German (surprise, surprise). And I think he got jail for homicide. I guess he'll be spending 3 months or so in prison. Bet he would've been electrocuted had he been wearing a swastika armband while cutting the guy.
There was this Japanese dude too, while in Paris, he killed some girl, ate her, than he got caught by the police and judged in France and considered mentally unstable and crazy, so he was sent back in Japan in an asylum, but the french authorities didn't specify how much time he had to stay there so he went out after a year. He's now some kind of superstar in Japan, and a culinary critic, or whatever you call that (he judges restaurants for a newspaper).
Issei Sagawa first hit the headlines in 1981 after he cannibalized a Dutch woman in Paris. He was briefly incarcerated in a French prison for the mentally insane before being returned to a similar facility in Japan, but then walking free in the mid-'80s, largely because his wealthy father paid for legal loopholes to be exploited.
