Dune Messiah is crazy boring, they probably put it in with Dune 'cause nobody would read it otherwise :-! The third one is still great though, and as was mentioned before, the other ones are kinda boring but still good.

Some colleague at job told me a bit about the other Dune books, and it sounds really good, with Leto and all. What's so bad about it?

There's nothing bad about them at all, it's just a lot of politics and religious stuff that would bore a lot of people. If you can make it through Messaiah and like it though, you'll be fine for the rest.

if you want a good sci-fi/war book you should read The Eternity Brigade by Stephen Goldin.

stfu.
stfu? You have to admit, it gets pretty damn *heavy* by the fourth book! I got half way through it and said "I'm done with Dune".

If you want some good Sci-Fi, try Philip Jose Farmer. He wrote Dayworld (I highly recommend it) among other things. Not post-apoc, but still quality sci-fi. His characters are never the greatest, but his imagination is first-class, thus he comes up with quite memorable stories/plot twists.
I barely ever read on my own time, hell even in school i dont read the required books. I still got through God Emperor and liked it, it does have alot of heavy concepts in it compared to the others and after every chapter i would sit back and think about it for couple minutes then go on. I'm almost done with the 5th one and I like it.

Nothing is better than Goosebumps though, they combine a spooky childs story in magnificient writing that should win awards. R.L. Stein is prolly one of the best.LEWL

i never read the required books in school either. if they didnt give you shitty books people would read them.

someone should set up a chapter/book summary site for all the shitty books they make you read in school.

I suppose the last sentence is sarcasm? Pretty much everyone at my school knows the sites by heart.

The Hobbit, Catcher in the Rye and Lord of Flies are the only good books I had to read at school, out of like, hundreds, or thousands.

Black Boy and Native Son were good. Heart of Darkness was OK. The Great Gatsby was awesome. Personally, I enjoyed Romeo and Juliet.

And Of Mice and Men was the bomb of course. I found The Grapes of Wrath to be a bit lengthy though.

The Scarlet Letter wasn't too great.

Death of a Salesman is great and the movie is great also (It has Dustin Hoffman and John Malkovich)

Julius Caesar was boring as fuck.

L'Etranger was also boring.

Can anyone think of a more perfect anti-hero than Holden?

the great gatsby and death of a salesman were terrible books.

oh and romeo and juliet both sucked and blew.

the only good shakespeare i read in school was hamlet. macbeth was an awesome character.
merchant of venece, julius caesar and romeo and juliet were boring.

I read these two out of school and liked them. All the books I've read at school have been pretty boring. From Shakespeare's crappy plays to 'gritty' dramas about some kid getting pissed off at everybody and not doing anything about it. If they were written recently he'd go on the internet and be into anime or something. Who the fuck chooses those lame books? Mabye some of them would be alright if you could read them a bit faster than a page every 2 minutes and the teacher didn't tell you the end and explain every fucking metaphor.

I had an english test today about 'Kes'. I forgot about most of it so ended up writing a bunch of bullshit that was a bit like a review mixed with some shitty help-tapes? I hope I don't have to write about 'warmth' and 'cold' when I'm doing an essay about Nazi Germany else I'd have ran out of cliche metaphors.

Writing papers on a book at school is easy, just write a load of BS. It's reading those 500 pages with small writing about Maya Angelou that's hard. That was the most awful book I read of my whole life. Now I came to hate that woman because of her book. Hrm I'm getting all upset now :/

Btw Animal Farm was neat too.

worst book any canadian can read is The Stone Angel. it was written by a canadian author so of course that means canadian students should read it.

the whole book is about some old skank whining about her whole life being a waste so, now shes a super bitch looking back at her life in pointless flashbacks, inserted into coversations for no reason.

EDIT: in relation to writing essays based on any piece of literature, you can just write about some bullshit off the top of your head and mix it with some chapter summaries and what someone else thinks about it and you get an A.

A couple of 50's post-apoc classics:

On The Beach - by Nevil Shute, c1957.
Alas, Babylon - by Pat Frank, c1959.

From the 70's there is Lucifer's Hammer - by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, c1977.
It has alot of post-apoc(actually post-comet) 70's flavor: Apollo-Soyuz, racial strife, pro vs anti technology.

The Forever War - by Joe Haldeman, c1974. Not really post-apoc, but it totally rocks.

Used bookstores = 8)

I just finished it about 20 minutes ago, so let me add it to the list o' books to recommend:

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert A. Heinlein.

Basically the story revolves around a revolt on the Lunar penal colony. The narator is one of the principle members of the revolt trying set the "history" books straight. Interesting methods used by rebels to bombard Earth, to say the least.

I'm half-way tempted to say that its better than Stranger in a Strange Land, but think I'll stick to a "cooling off period" before making such a bold statement.

I should start reading Red Orc's Rage by Philip Jose Farmer, but I'm in the process of reading more about Jung... Still, it looks interesting to me, and I'm usually repelled when I notice a fantasy book.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that Farmer sometimes writes fantasy, which is good but not as good as his Sci-Fi.
