You could probably snag a Final Fantasy VII PC game on eBay for a few dollars. Err.. its still $20 and up. Nevermind..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... gory=11050
Crazy... But then, I once sold a spare FF3 for like $50.
Sheesh, it should be like $5 now. Its OLD.

Maybe this effeminate men fashion is due to some counter-reaction to older japanese culture, like from the beginning to the '50s, it was a very straight and serious culture. Every single person was stuck in his/her role, they are like exploding now, and inversing everything.
Those pictures are sick tho.

you gotta admit though chrono trigger had a bad assed storyline with bad assed characters and usually kept you interested.

The FF games have some strategy to them. Its just that most people bypass it by building up too much. Its like winning on the game in "easy" mode.
If you just go through it and play to the end, ignoring little secret stuff and the opportunities to build up, then you'll have a hard time of it.
And Final Fantasy tactics speaks for itself. Although I'd prefer the storyline missions to have enemies adjusted to your level. I always thought it was funky how I could build up to level 50, decide to go on with the story, and run into level 15 wimps :-/
I will admit though, puzzles are a bit lacking in console RPGs. Usually limited to you not knowing what to do next because you already talked to the person you were suppose to talk to after doing X task that was totally unrelated to the person you need to talk to after doing X task.
But seriously, every game has its flaws. Its just that the big companies are going to have more devout protestors than the little guys. Like Blizzard and Square. Id say 9 out of 10 people that hate squaresoft also hate Blizzard, 8 of those 10 like South Park, and 6 of those 10 hate Barney the Dinosaur.

That's a good one, thanks for the laugh.[TBC]-PaladinHeart wrote:The FF games have some strategy to them.
FF games are incredibly lacking in any tactics other than to figure out what the enemy is weak against and use the apropos element/attack/skill/magic furby. Rinse and repeat and toss in the occasional summon/esper/aeon/super-long cinematic annoyance at the 40th time watching it.
For a better sense of tactics, straight from SquareSoft, no less, play Treasure Hunter G or Final Fantasy 5 (which FFX-2 takes a bit from, as did FFT for the job system, which was in a couple of the very early NES FF games, not FF1). Treasure Hunter G even has lesbian love interests!

Wow, superdeformed lesbians.
I've played FF5 a bit (I have the 5 & 6 remake for the playstation). I just couldn't get that interested in it. Same with the two Star Ocean thingies. I purchased them both but just haven't felt inclined to play through yet. Had em at least a year now.
There really is a lot of strategic stuff in the FF games, they just don't exactly make you use it :-/
Its like a monster only takes 50% damage from your fire spell, but 200% damage from yoru lightning. Both spells do 50 damage. Too bad the monster only has 10 hit points.
I read once that all the american versions were dumbed down and made easier.

That still doesn't quite invalidate the point about Treasure Hunter G.
A pity, since it had a bit of good writing and the class system was pretty damn good. But then again, I'm going by my experience playing the original.I've played FF5 a bit (I have the 5 & 6 remake for the playstation). I just couldn't get that interested in it.
I'm going to have to call bullshit on this unless you really know Japanese. De-Jap hasn't quite gotten done with Star Ocean 1, Star Ocean 2 has been out for the PSX for a while now, and Star Ocean 3 hasn't been released outside of Japan yet.Same with the two Star Ocean thingies. I purchased them both but just haven't felt inclined to play through yet. Had em at least a year now.
That's not strategy. That's a basic game mechanic blown up into old hat and dry-humped into the fucking ground incessantly, all within the same game and then repeatedly in the next incarnation. There really is a lot of strategic stuff in the FF games, they just don't exactly make you use it :-/

I've played all the versions, 1-8, playing 10, didn't care to touch 9 after I played 8, but my sister got me interested in FFX a bit. I will say the stat progression was an interesting, if unique, method. I'm about to play through them all again, that is why I'm brushing up on my Japanese and using that for a bit of help for media references, I will have to rely on my family for the conversational part.I read once that all the american versions were dumbed down and made easier.

Well I was going to go check the names on the two Star Ocean thingies. Im not sure about the names. Anyway its two games by the same company in those rather big cardboard box thingies. I think one is Silver Star story complete, and the other umm.. Star Ocean or Lunar Moon or something? Anyway I've misplaced them. I think I know where they are (I put a lot of my playstation games up one time when my room started leaking). Ruined my FF Tactics and FF9. Had to replace Tactics (with an original one from eBay), but let 9 slide.
I guess I just got bored building up the different classes in FF5. Its likely I got interested in a different game at the time and just couldn't get back into it. I'll definitely play it again later though, and also the star ocean thingies. You know, I could be mistaken about one and it be in Japanese. That'd be funny :-P
The bit about the elements is really only strategic if you have to keep scanning the monster to see what it changed its element to. They really should do this stuff a little better. FF2 (4) had some cool armor in regards to the elements. I remember in the summoner's monster world, having to make sure I had the right equipment to fight Leviathan since water does HUGE damage to someone wearing a fire shield and/or armor. They need more resistant armors in their games and they should have the damage do a lot if you're not wearing it. They've dumbed it down too much by taking out too many equipment options.
FF9 is much better than 8 in my opinion. You just have to get past the cartoonish appearance of the characters. I really don't like the extra challenges in the game though. The L1 & R1 thing is tedious and makes your fingers/hands hurt after a while :-/ Makes it kinda hard to get and/or find everything.
I wish they would do another game as long as FF2 and 3 again. I really miss the epics. Stuff they make nowadays is like short stories.

Lol those are Lunar Silver Star and Lunar 2 Eternal Blue, they have nothing whatsoever to do with Star Ocean. Totally different games, creators, and everything.[TBC]-PaladinHeart wrote:Well I was going to go check the names on the two Star Ocean thingies. Im not sure about the names. I think the whole elements strategy thing is basically the same as rock, paper, scissors. Not much strategy really, just common sense.[TBC]-PaladinHeart wrote: The bit about the elements is really only strategic bla bla bla
I think Roshambo is the 'proper' name for rock, paper, scissors too? Bizarro eh?
