I think DACers in general should try to be more open-minded and less hostile to other games. As an example, last month I mentioned that Morrowind was a fun game, and got bombarded with replies saying how Morrowind sucked, and was a disgrace to humanity, etc. Of course, it's our responsibility to flame the idiot fans of the games, but maybe it's best to not use Fallout as a standard against wich to measure the games themselves.
And is it just me, or should smiley's not have feet?

I don't have anything against talking about other games or saying they're cool. I just mind if people wholeheartedly endorse them, give empty praise, or pimp them. But if you're just going on about how you think Morrowind is cool, go right ahead.
That one reminds me of the dancing banana from some crappy, unfunny flash animation long ago. You know, the one Killa Killa had in his avatar. These new smilies blow chunks (except the goatse one, which blows chunks only in the figurative sense).Franz_Schoobie wrote:And is it just me, or should smiley's not have feet?
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Hmm. The site is improving. Now we need a spellcheck.
The other emoticons are cool too.
There is a mod community.

There is also Ian Out. Its not a new mod but a new engine based on the fallout engine. (he "got" the critters and items dat but anyway who cares).
There is life beyond interplay. Stay tuned.

I seriously don't see what could be so damn bad with MP as long as the multiplayer is co-op only, too little co-op overall nowadays methinks.
And to get back on topic I think you guys should just concentrate on post-apoc games. The major drawback to that might be that the now sudden influx of games of that kind probably wont keep up for ever. But I for one are more interested in good games in the setting than the setting in itself.
If you were to go the way of post apoc media in general there are already, as mentioned, more complete and dedicated sites for that. It would be hard to stand out.

I suppose multiplayer could be cool, in theory, but I've never seen a really compelling multiplayer or co-op game. The concept isn't that cool, anyway. I could drone on and on about why multiplayer is really pretty lame, but I'm sure you've heard it before. If I wanted co-op I'd play tabletop with my friends, which is a lot more fun anyway.
As for assimilating the other sites, I'd rather not have to deal with a bunch of weird foreigners, unless we could use them as slave labor or something.

That Megatron has a disturbing like of weird photographic material?Killzig wrote:Well I guess this recent event only brings to light what we've all known for a good while now.
Which part of the FO:BOS stuff have you missed? No seriously, I'd say that's anything from stagnate. Though if you want, take a look at the X-Com community and see how they've survived. Similar scenario (whore-outs etc... as I'm pretty sure you know) but they still exist. Few people doing some modding stuff (though limited). They are a shitload quiter than DaC though. That's gotta be expected. You can't be a fan-site for ONE game series and not expect some quiet times.Killzig wrote:The Fallout community is stagnate, has been for a good while.
That's not really a problem. (Like, you can still be a fan-site for the good stuff, duh. Point out all the bad shit and stuff, you know? Become like the 'Codex and bad-mouth all the populist shit that sucks and support the indie's. That's always fun.)Killzig wrote:So here are some ideas...
Cover all things Post Apocalyptic. Books, Movies, Games. The whole kit and kaboodle. Problem: Most of these things suck, hard. (See: FOPOS, Kevin Costner and Puuk)
Notice how Fallout is still on their front-page? Also notice the most current news post:Killzig wrote:not only that, PAMEDIA is already a pretty good site, you don't need much more than that.

I have changed the look, a little, to the front page. Time to start working on the rest of the site.

Isn't that what's been happening though? When was the last month DaC went without ANY non-Fallout news? Most times every 2nd or third news item at least, has been about non-Fallout stuff. Hell, going as far back as Static and even prior to that, DaC has been posting non-Fallout shit. I think the path you've been going down is clear, it's just that it's been happening so gradually that you haven't noticed it.Killzig wrote:Cover all things Post Apoc Gaming (expand areas for other games such as STALKER and Project Phoenix)
Well, you could always just pick a game company at random and become a fan-site for them and all their gaems!11! I hear that one works. Don't ask me what company you'll pick though, because Troika's taken, foo.Killzig wrote:Other... please elaborate.
General bitching out of the way, I think continuing with the coverage of PA games and turning into more of a PA game site would be good. At the end of the day, you'll have the Fallout stuff but the new PA games will spice things up a bit, rather than "yet another Fallout mod likely to go nowhere has just been announced".
Of course, if you're going to cover more PA games, you will need to re-jiggy the site. Stay the fuck away from PHP-Nuke. There's nothing like saying we're a bunch of shitty fucktards who can't do shit ourselves by having a standard PHP-Nuke site. Keep the DaC right-side "we're all Arabic" theme but your links will have to change once you figure out how you're going to cover all this shit. Tacking another game on the bottom of your list is going to make this place like every other multi-link site out there. Too many fucking links and all of them not clear enough. At the end of the day, avoid the blur of words and slabs of text as much as possible.
... and my thoughts on that end there, as that's your problem, not mine.
There's other stuff to DaC too though. I mean, shit like the Kiddie pool is sorely missed (new one, now goddammit!). So, as has been said in this thread, milk the community for all it's worth. Maybe user reviews of PA games, and uhhh... other shit like that. You know, whatever works. You'll also have to figure out if you're going to *really* cover each decent PA game too. As in, do you have weapons lists, walkthroughs so on etc.. for each and every game you end up covering, or do you just have a few user reviews, links to other sites and that's it?
As I said, DaC's already on the right track. I think you're just trying to figure out how to keep the train on track while replacing the engine at the same time¹.
Same thing happens with any site about any topic. Unless you're CNN or a general "any news" site, you're going to get slow news periods. Take a look at some of the other fan-sites for other games out there and get some perspective.Mad Max RW wrote:Believe it or not, there isn't a whole helluva lotta games stuff to talk about. Yeah, there's a lot of games but news about them happens rarely. And the few that have constant news are stupid little things like what kind of ammo a certain gun will have or other pointless bullshit.

¹Oh, why I do think my analogy was rather good.
EDIT: One other thing just in case. Figure out who's going to help you and who isn't and do it quick smart. You'll need as much help as you can get. Don't do something stupid like thinking you can do all this on your own. Not sure if it's necessary to say that, but hey, DaC has just come back after shutting down for a day, so I'm not presuming anything.

I don't think it's the fact that the games pretty dead, there's still the odd bit of news every week.
I don't know. The last week didn't really change anything. It got a sudden burst of users and we should have used that by having more content. Mabye plan it out more. We couldn't do that again though, but there's other ways. Any time the site changes, so does the community. For instance on the old gamespy boards things weren't thriving. It was similairily deadish then I thought, a few regulars and not much news. Then Fallout Fantasy gets noticed and dac moves sites, I reckon we had a high amount of users then and it's kept building. Over the last month though things have slowed down again, similair too 2 years ago.
For DAC too survive I think we need more user stuff. Everybody here probably has something they're good at. They may not have the time, but they'd probably make the time? The Fallout community isn't small, just quiet. There's plenty of Fallout fans on the interberry, DAC just needs too be more accessible.
I think it might help if we have the content sooner rather than later. It's fine talking about it, but will we act on it? The general idea seems too be too make DAC less Fallout orientated and more post-apoc. I reckon putting all the Fallout stuff under a new specific section instead of dominating the right menu and adding new sections would be helpful mebbe. Adding a movie database could be a good start, with user-submitted stuff too go along with it. We've had threads in GD with average reviews, perhaps we could do similair for PA movies?
The things that keep a community going is news on what the community is related too. Since we won't be getting much news about Fallout any more the site has too change. It could also be good if news was sorted by importance. Knowing about mods or fobos reviews is alright, but putting them mixed in with FO3 snippets or something might be a bit silly?
The users could also be a little more friendly too. It's funny mabye the first time you make fun of someone because they like consoles, but just adding a single line or repeating what the last guy said is killing the community. Perhaps you could just ignore them or act less tuff?
bizarro
