Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy -- THE MOVIE!

Post by Killzig »

Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy is finally coming to the big screen. They've had a flurry of casting recently, so far they've got Martin Freeman from The Office playing Arthur Dent, Zooey Deschanel (cute chick from Elf) as Trillian and Mos Def as Ford Prefect. They've also got a prototype for Marvin.

He'll be voiced by the same guy who voiced Marvin in the TV and radio series. Jim Henson's creature shop created the suit and they're also designing the costumes for the Vogons. No word yet on how the audience will survive listening to Vogon poetry though.

looks like a lot of fun, can't wait.

Mos Def as Ford Prefect? Bizarro.

I'm reading the trilogy at the moment, good stuff.

Actually I think that's pretty good casting. Mos Def is a decent actor who's defintiely under used.

I haven't seen any of his movies so I can't really comment on his skills. I just imagined ford too be white and english, not a black american rapper. Mabye Zaphod, whatever.

It just matters if he can pull off the personality well. I hope the movie isn't shit though.

Will they be doing all the books or what?

Mos Def was pretty neato in Italian Job and I don't see why Ford shouldn't be black. I'd like to see how they do Zaphod's extra head, though.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

Another sacred cow is led into McHollywood's meat rendering plant... Having recently seen the painfully bad remakes of Get Carter and The Italian Job, I don't hold out any hope of this movie staying remotely faithfull to the original radio series.

this film isn't hollywood, as far as i know its a british studio taking the reigns. filming will begin in april. and 2004 might be a harbinger of the apocalypse seeing as there is actually a decent remake in the work (Coen Brother's The Ladykillers)

That is totally not how I ever pictured Marvin...I thought of him as more of a C3P0 type...With maybe a square head, or something.

Yeah, not looking like a modern sony-type of midget with a big head? At least it's a real model instead of cgi though.

There's certain things that seem to me a little crappy like the music director directing it, marvin and ford. I'll just wait and see, perhaps it'll be faithful too the book and be pulled off well (lotr, harry potter) or badly. You can more or less guarantee there's going too be a torrent of people who'll jump on the bandwagon like lotr though, which could be annoying.

Who knows eh, who knows? Cheers mate. I hope they leave other books alone though, but since they seem to be the new comic-book there's probably going to be a flood of them. Who knows.

David Fincher started off doing music videos so who knows mate... honestly I can't think of any big time directors I'd tab to do this film. Terry Gilliam comes to mind but it would probably never get done.

I try to have a bit of an open mind...that's not how I pictured Marvin either, but the fact of the matter is each of us pictured Marvin in a completely different way--if you want Marvin to look the way you want Marvin to look, I guess you can always start directing movies. And it could work as a movie, given the right alchemy of PROPER editing, adherence to the source material, imagery, and comedy...probably won't happen, but saying something might be good before you see anything about it makes a lot more sense then assuming it'll be shit.

The Mos Def thing kinda threw me off...I mean, a big part of the books is silly English stuff (Ford Prefect's name is an English joke)and Mos Def isn't English...then again the book never said he picked up the accent, and since he spent time all over Earth I guess it's to be assumed he might not have one. Freeman looks to be a good choice for Arthur--I don't know, what do you guys think of him? It looks interesting though, I'm definitely looking forward to it...

But, as someone pointed out, there's probably going to be an influx of inbred retards getting their stupidity all over HHGthG.

i kind of like the marvin concept. I would have pictured him taller, maybe on wheels. but i think the giant head goes well with his brain being the size of a planet bit ... and he also does look very sad. heh

I'm pretty sure Marvin actually does have legs. In Life, the Universe and Everything, the white robots from Krikkit come to the swamp planet where Marvin has been waiting for thousands of years on end and they take away one of his legs.

Or that's how I remember it. I must admit, though, when I first read about Marvin, I saw a short robot on wheels.

I never really picture characters in books, just shapes and things that make the character (clothes they always wear, weapons they always carry etc.)

It should be intresting seeing some of the things though, like the actual guide or the whale.

How will the books be handled? Not much happens in thanks for all the fish, but I guess they'd have too cut enough out of the other books left over for another movie.

Whatever the end result is, it should be intresting too watch. It's not much the movie that I'm 'worried' about, it'll be the sudden bandwagon people will jump on. I also hope it'll be given a decent certificate/classification so I'm not sitting in a cinema full of kids wondering why the big-headed robot is so sad.

I have to admit I'm a bit taken aback by Marvins appearance. He looks like a midget Stormtrooper. On the other hand, if this movie manages to have some unique insights into the story, and a more original look to it (as it appears to), then it should be a film worth seeing.

Neato. I doubt it'll be that good, but at least it's an interesting. Wasn't there some stuff on a HG movie a long time ago, though?

And Martin Freeman from the office rocks.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.
