Free Books!

Post by Jimmyjay86 »

Unlike the RIAA, Baen Books has embraced the free electronic distribution of some of its older published works. Amazing is all I can say and a great way to get people interested in the publisher.
Eric Flint wrote:Baen Books is now making available for free a number of its titles in electronic format. We're calling it the Baen Free Library. Anyone who wishes can read these titles online no conditions, no strings attached. (Later we may ask for an extremely simple, name & email only, registration. ) Or, if you prefer, you can download the books in one of several formats. Again, with no conditions or strings attached. (URLs to sites which offer the readers for these format are also listed. )

Why are we doing this? Well, for two reasons.

The first is what you might call a "matter of principle." This all started as a byproduct of an online "virtual brawl" I got into with a number of people, some of them professional SF authors, over the issue of online piracy of copyrighted works and what to do about it.

There was a school of thought, which seemed to be picking up steam, that the way to handle the problem was with handcuffs and brass knucks. Enforcement! Regulation! New regulations! Tighter regulations! All out for the campaign against piracy! No quarter! Build more prisons! Harsher sentences!
Baen Free Library

There are many great science fiction books in here including works by Andre Norton, Larry Niven, Murray Leinster, and many others. So go over and download to your hearts content. A free registration is required with no strings attached.

did you actually look at the number of books?
there is one book under niven and pournelle and its the same goddamn one.

meh i prefer to hold a book in my hands than get a massive aneurism trying to read one on a comp screen.

Maybe you should also save your eyes by not coming to this forum too? I'm sure taking the time to read all these posts is eventually going to make you blind too. We can get along without you, thx.

Well it isn't all their stuff, it is like Mandalorian said only a small sampling. It gets people interested in the publisher and builds a fan base so to speak. The works are not really the greatest science fiction but are pretty decent action stories and worth a read.

Sadly none of the books are in PDF format. I guess I'll have to keep getting them from Kazaa.

Perhaps the books are not in a printer friendly format?

Anyway, this is a great find, and I will be spending much time reading.

RTF version is also available, and it is printer friendly.

Ah, good. Very good. But that solution presents a new problem: It would cost a few hundred dollars in ink/toner cartridges and paper to properly print these books out. Time to get a few used copies off of eBay for $5 each. I love eBay.

I think they should use that PDF version. Its easier to use and read. People are used to the Acrobat Reader.

I think who did the conversion is not going to sue the company for using his material.

Hmmm. This new emoticon is cool.

Most books on the site are available in several formats to be used in various readers. Acrobat Reader is too slow for my tastes and its files are too huge.
