::DISCLAIMER:: none of these rifles are machineguns and all are legal to own in my state.
i finally got may car back last month and since i'm now living off-campus i was able to pull all of my hardware out of storage and stick it in my safe.
that black thing hanging off the rifle is called a kobra collimator sight and projects a little aiming reticle on a piece of glass, put that reticle over your target and you'll hit it. many a watermelon can attest to it's effectiveness out to 300 yards.
here's what i see when i aim. the reticle is much clearer in real life, it just looks shitty since i suck with the camera.

there are actually four different types of reticles, a dot for long shots, an inverted T for in close, an inverted chevron for speed shots and an inverted chevron for speed and distance.

to the right?
it's an armalite made AR18. one of the early ones, takes proprietary mags and such. very good shooter, in the right hands it hits right around 1.5 MOA.
also, just to nitpick: it isn't really an M16 since it is not fully-automatic. it is the civilian version called the SP1, functionally the same but without full-auto capability.

i bird hunt almost every year but didn't photograph my shotguns.
i've been on a deer hunt but never shot any. the sks has taken two deer before but by a friend, not me.
i kind of fell into collecting since most males in my family have extensive collections themselves and i grew up around firearms. mostly i just like the ability to own and use such fine pieces of machinery, but it does kill your bank account. ammo, mags, parts, sights, etc.

Heh... Quite a hobby. I don't know why, but people collecting guns always seem intimidating to me. Although I guess I'm being a bit hypocritical here, because I collect knives myself? Eck.
And by the way... What are those things on the third picture under the "some history" text, those two on the right? Never seen anything like those before.

here's a little info.
more info: http://www.johnsonautomatics.com/I've always loved stories of how one man's grit and perseverance makes something happen, against serious odds.
Such a man was U.S. Marine Captain Melvin M. Johnson, who, as Marine observer to the Springfield Company, thought he saw a couple of design flaws with the M1 Garand and thought he could design a better combat rifle.
Using bits and pieces (the prototype's firing pin was a knitting needle), Johnson designed the rifle which would come to be known as the M1941 Johnson, firing a .30-06 cartridge from a fixed 10-round rotary magazine, through a 22" barrel:
The M1941 weighed the same as a Garand, and in its initial tests for the Army in 1939, actually outshot the Garand (82% - 71% hits). The Garand reloaded quicker, but the Johnson held its point of impact better (perhaps because more of its barrel length was exposed, and cooled more quickly?). Interestingly enough, though, the Johnson tended to "string" (create vertical lines of holes in the target) because of the recoiling barrel action.
In addition, the M1941 had about a third less recoil than the Garand, and could be "topped up" with single rounds or a 5-round stripper clip while there were still rounds left in the magazine -- which the Garand could not do (you have to remove the Garand clip altogether and reload with a full one).
What doomed the Johnson was the fact that it was a bear to field-strip -- lots of teeny pieces to be dropped and lost, which normally spells doom for the owner, and it acquired a reputation for requiring lots of cleaning. Also, spares were more plentiful for the Garand, and so in 1940, the Army selected the Garand instead.
Johnson didn't give up, and managed to get his rifle tested by the USMC. In the interim, an order for 70,000 rifles was placed by the Dutch government for issue to soldiers defending their Pacific territories -- later canceled because the Japanese were overrunning the islands too quickly. But this stockpile meant that there was a ready supply for the USMC to issue to Marine paratroopers, who loved the low recoil and reliability of the M1941, and the fact that the barrel could easily be removed for compact storage.
Only about 30,000 M1941 rifles were ever produced. Some found their way to South America, and were re-chambered to 7mm, while others were "sporterized" into calibers like .270.
The Johnson actually evokes two responses from previous users: some found it too finicky, others absolutely loved them. Some time ago, gun writer Robert T. Shimek did a field test on one of these for Guns & Ammo magazine, and his only regret was that he couldn't shoot it more.
If you want one of these, they're expensive. Originals can fetch almost $6,000 (!!), but you can get a remanufactured M1941 from Mil-Tech Arms for less.
Here's the full scoop on the M1941 Johnson -- a testament to a guy who wouldn't quit.

hahaha hand-held bullet propulsion devices. sounds like some gun loving people got together and desided that the word gun was the equivelent of the phrase swell guy-rigging and desided to change it, and suddenly african american engineering was born.
i can honestly say that collection is impressive in itself but it doesnt impress me.

i'm not really trying to impress anyone, i just like to share some pics of my hardware.
the pictures could be taken as poilitical but i was trying to make a point that i don't want my thread sullied by pointless emotional arguments about who should/shouldn't be able to own firearms.
i would love a real thompson submachinegun but i don't have 14K to drop on a good one. that and full auto firearms eat up your fun budget in a heartbeat.

i guess. too bad people i know who hunt grew out of shooting animals with long range projectile weapons and shoot with bows.Wolfman Walt wrote:Obviousily its for those especially aggressive deer.
it takes actual skill to kill something with a bow.

all the rifles except for my 2 5.56mm poodleshooter rifles can be used to hunt deer with. other than that they aren't really meant to have much purpose besides typical firearms uses; collection, target shooting and worst case scenario defense.id love to know when you would use one of those guns tho.
it obviously takes much more skill to kill a deer with a bow than with a rifle, but don't sell rifles short. it still takes a tremendous amount of skill to make clean kill shots on deer and other game animals. any jackass can hit a deer with a nonlethal shot but the skill is shown when you can take the animal out instantly with a good shot.it takes actual skill to kill something with a bow.
